O/T - The Possum

No Show George Jones died earlier today. Another living legend gone. Just thought I would share the news for those of us who are fans of traditional country music.

He lasted over 60 years in the business, I guess true talent never goes out of style.

(quoted from post at 11:36:50 04/26/13) who's gonna take his place? not many doing the traditional country today. RIP George
"Who's gonna fill their shoes?"
George is one of my all time favorites, he will be sorely missed.
May he rest in peace.

Always like George Jones. Amazing he lived as long as he did with the demons he had to deal with.

Didnt he hit a bridge a few years back and almost die?

Rick

It's a shame. He was a good one. Sure he had problems in his youth, but dont we all? He and his wife owned a large house outside of Nashville. An overly large rocking chair sits in front by the curb (al la "I don't need your rockin' chair"). At Christmas time the house was decorated and he and his wife would pose for pictures with fans who stopped by.

So it really was his farewell tour. Don't scold me, I'm a big fan of his and have been since Hector was a pup. TDF

True country music artist.

Not like today's country - it's basically rock 'n roll - and fairly hard rock - just with a country "twang" in the vocals.

I have a bar band, we play classic and newer rock - and we play "Kick it in the Sticks", which is supposed to be a country song - that's not country. Driving beat, distorted dropped-tuned guitars - all the hallmarks of today's rock. But with twang, so they call it country.

I like all kinds of music, but when I want to hear country, I want George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, either Hank, Alabama (who were pretty progressive for their time), Oak Ridge Boys, Statler Brothers, etc.

Oh and Roger Miller. Any time is a good time for Roger Miller. That guy was a genius.

P.S. we were also learning She's Country by jason Aldean. Well, "she" might be country, but this song's not.

It's a crime they call that garbage on the radio "country". Watered-down corporate drivel with a twang. Today's record sellers are nothing more than name dropping sellouts, the likes of which don't deserve to be spit on by the greats like Hank, Pierce, Lefty, Jones, Buck, Hag, Jennings, Lynn, etc, etc.

Kinda gets to me that I been listening to George since I got married in the early 60's. A true country singer.

He was a good one.
When I was driving truck one of the old time all night disc jockey would say, when in doubt about what to play, grab a George Jones record.
We are losing the great ones day by day.

Dont forget Keith Whitley a young true artist but he died young.one of my fovorites along with all the above, george, hank,no country like the old country .

George was coming to my town in June, one of the headliners for the opening of the new Jimmy Buffet casino, Margueritaville. I was thinking about getting tickets, but guess I can forget that.

I should have said "coming back" to my town. Like so many others---Hank W., Jim Reeves, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Elvis, list goes on---George's first big gig was here on the Louisiana Hayride. He grew up just over the line in east Texas.

My life-long liking of his music began in the summer of '62. I was in Buras, La., working in the oil field. The juke box at the bar/restaurant/rooming house where I was staying (the Big Fish; anybody remember it?) played "She Thinks I Still Care" about every other song. I was hooked.

He's my favorite! or was. Gonna miss him! I sure like his and all the classics. Not like today's "country" with lyrics like "I will never, never, never....that have NO musical talent. I remember how "horrified" I was when Sawyer Brown "rocked it all up" in the 80's-90's. I thought that was bad, now look what we got! There is one kid, Bradley Gaskin, with a true country sound. Of course they won't play him.

Nothing if you like them. My point was how I thought they really were "rock and roll" and ruining the country sound, but they were nothing like whats happening to todays country.
