anyone reasonably close to coshocton county that has a splitting stand for a farmall M that they would be willing to rent out,...hate to build one for one time job....

Go ahead and build one...You will have it for the next time!I built one(a 'universal') several years ago.You would be surprised how many times it has used-By me and the neighbors!

I have not used splitting stand in years. Now days I have a 20 foot long I-Beam with 2 chain hoists on rollers and places to hang a number of other hoists so splitting a tractor is very easy. I plan to add another 20 foot to it one of these days

That's a great idea. The front half really should be suspended from above anyhow, so it doesn't roll over sideways on the bolster. Why not the back half, as well? Keeps perfect alignment for sliding the halves back together, too.

Ya it does work well. I did an 8N ford a few years back to do the clutch and had it split in less then an hour all the way down to the clutch. Hung the engine and hung the rear end. Putting it back together was very easy with the chain hoists since you can move parts up and down just what is needed for them to slide back as they should. Wish I had had that when I did the Farmall 450
