Got the genny working today. Thanks to JMOR for the wiring diagram for a 4 wire regulator. Someone had put a 3 wire delco regulator on, which didn't work. After removing it we discovered there were mounting holes for the new 4 wire regulator. All books showed a 4 wire regulator too. Go figure, someone had thought a 3 wire would work. BTW, We couldn't guy a 3 wire regulator.

Had to bend the tab on the voltage relay armature to losen the spring tension. The voltage on the new regulator went over 16.25v. After 3 attempts the voltage now is close to 14.5v. Friend is happy.

Back in the day, we used to install 3 wire regulators when the 4 wire type were no longer stocked by the local dealers.

The conversion was as simple as putting both the BAT and L wires on the Bat terminal of the 3 wire regulator. They seemed to work as well as the 4 wire type.

The 3 wire regulator looked like it was wired correctly, just bad. Couldn't find a 3 wire. Even sanded the contacts, no luck. The odd thing is YT doesn't list a regulator for a MF 50.
