revisiting penetrating oil

Im having trouble with several nuts etc. on my H and have had no luck with PB Blaster, the blue hot wrench and several others and now am considering using ATF with acetone . In rereading the discussion some one sayes they do not mix. How do you get it on the nut if it doesn't mix Thanks.

I use straight ATF. Heat it up good then slowly pour some atf on it. Yes it will smoke a good bit but keep adding a little at a time and most thing I have done that with freed up

Sometimes it takes a few cycles of heating and cooling with the blue tip wrench to make the progress you want. If there is no cast iron involved or steel of structural integrity you can heat the parts glowing red hot and quickly quench the red hot part in cold. This quick contraction of metal often breaks the rust bond loose.

Be aware that this will crack cast iron (sometimes) and will make steel brittle.

I mix my ATF and acetone in a small garden sprayer. Just have to shake it to remix it everytime!

They mix, but do not stay mixed long.

All you need to do is train yourself to shake the acetone / atf mix every time you use it.

One good trick I read on this forum was [if you have air tools] let the air gun ,turned real low just rap,rap rap on it for awhile to shock it loose. To answer your question just put it on with an acid brush thinner first then ATF - in my theory the ATF will follow the thinner into the thread. { i'm calling the acetone thinner] Some of the products mentioned in the last discussion sound very interesting . I think I'll go reread that one.I'm still upset I paid 11 bucks a can for Kroil.

This only works if you can get at it with two hammers, but take one hammer and hold it against the nut as an anvil and then whack the other side of the nut with another hammer. It distorts the nut just enough to crack the rust so a penetrant will get in there. The hot wrench should have done that already but its a suggestion for future reference. Jim

Kroil does work and if comparing to wd40 or pb blaster a can of kroil lasts a lot longer It don't take near as much. I'm not saying that some other things work better Im just saying it will surprise you how long that can of kroil will last when compared to others it don't take as much if you spray it on and it drips off you used to much.

Leave the so-called "penetrating oil" on the store shelf and stick with the hot wrench. IT WORKS. If the hot wrench isn't working for you, you haven't applied enough of it.

What do you mean by "blue wrench?"

Cuz, the WD-40 company just came out with a penetrating oil that has "Blue Torch Technology" whatever that is.

If your "blue wrench" is a $5 propane torch that you'd use to defrost pipes, you're wasting propane. Use it to cook hot dogs or solder some copper pipe fittings.

Blue wrench means oxy-acetlyene, oxy-MAPP, or oxy-propane.

Thanks for the input but I have tried alot and kroil work the best for me ,but I dont always have a week or month to wait it out.Again thank you for your opinion.

I do not wait a day or a week or a month many times it is minutes or maybe and hour and ATF is still on the very top of every thing I have tried in my 40 plus years of doing this type of stuff

Nothing works better than heat. Of course you have to be able to heat something without damage to other things and that's where the oils come in. If you want to use heat, use a lot of it and get things HOT. As was said, a little propane torch ain't gonna cut it.

Good for you but for me at less hen $5 a quart I'll stick with ATF. Last time I could find the Kroil it was 2 or 3 times higher and I use a lot of ATF and keep an old pumper oil can full of it
