I need to paint a small barn, shed, and chicken coop this summer and my wife wants barn red and white. Anyone have a recommendation on paint brand and/or what to stay away from? I want a good paint that is not going to break the bank, something right in the middle...thanks for the help, ~Anthony

I can't say why the lindseed works, but it does. Of course your oil base paints have a lot of lindseed oil in them, or they use to. Now if your painting over water based paint, I wouldn't guarantee anything. Dad always put on straight lindseed oil over well worn old painted buildings, sometimes 2 coates before the final coat with oil base paint. I helped him paint one building 50 years ago and it still has quite a bit of red on it, not bright, but still has red cast. I still use a lot of lindseed oil for coating outdoor wood items, painted or not. Works great on trailer floors and etc. It will tend to darken an item, so if something is to maintain a natural look, maybe not the right thing. About as expensive as paint, but is a good water proofing product.

I have used Cabot"s solid stain latex "barn red" color. It has lasted almost 10 years on 3 barns we have--a large bank barn, smaller loafing barn and corn crib. My white trim is only on the windows. I used Benjamin Moore "brilliant white" latex paint. It does not last as long because it is paint and not stain. I used a 4" roller on the vertical siding because a larger roller would not work on cupped boards. I cut in with a large brush on the battens. The barns are sided with poplar board and batten siding.

I second Benjamin Moore. Used it on all my outbuildings. Has held up very well. Wife works at a local hardware store and we get a discount which helps.

i'll second the oilbased barn paint....menards, home depot or lowe's are 3 more spots. mix it with linseed oil. UNLESS it has been painted with latex; then your problems have just begun. the peeling will go on for years with latex. never paint out buildings with latex!!!!!!!
oil based painted will last 40yrs and look new, the whole time!

The oil base available today has different ingredients in it compared to the "good old days".
As a result it seems to peel and just doesn't last like the old formulas did. If you use a primer latex doesn't peel.
The last few year I have been using latex red stain by Cabot with good results.
Location will also determine how long a paint job lasts. I have one building site that I painted all the buildings 17 years ago and it was painted with latex white. All the buildings lasted very good except one which was away from the trees and exposed to blowing snow blizzards and dust in windstorms. It lasted less then half the time so location plays a part on how long the paint lasts.

I am not an expert, but I have had problems with oil based paint cracking and peeling. Found this site that is interesting.
