They are the cheapest wood that they can find to make the landscape timbers out of. Usually there are what is left when they make plywood. They can't turn/peel them any smaller.

Some of the landscape timbers will last many years some of the others will not last a few years. It is all about what wood they are made of and how well they are treated. I know they are tempting because of their cheap price but you get what you pay for. A good creosoted post will last for years longer than the treated landscape timbers.

I can buy 4 inch diameter 8 foot tall creosoted posts for about $5. That is in a bundle of 50.
 
If you decide to use them, pick out the driest ones you can find. The wetter they are, the more prone to warping. I"ve seen some curl almost into a "U".
 
Landscape timbers will rot. They are treated to some extent, but nearly as much as the treated lumber you buy.
