I raise bees and own about 35 living hives right now.......i say living cause we lost about 25% this winter. We were at a little over 50 hives. Anyway who else raises bees? Saw out first dandelion last tuesday but then got down to 30 degrees last night. Suppose to be 32 tonight. I live in the east central Kansas area. How many hives do you have and what is the status in your area this year?

This is my first year......we are getting our bees
tomorrow morning. Had 2" snow on the ground that
fell last night. I have 2 hives and my mentor has
20.

Very late start....am looking forward to this new
adventure......got my syrup all mixed and a few
bee patties ready to go!!

Looking forward to seeing how the orchard does
this year with the extra help.

I have tried for years, and haven"t been successful. Just about a month ago, hive died, full super of honey left on top, They starved to death. Going to try again with some southern Missouri Bee"s. They are suppose to be smarter!

I did many years ago but then had an accident which cause me not to be able to handle them or the stings any more. We still have a lot of New old stock bee supplies for making hive frames etc

i am in florida and have a few hives just about
have 2 supers full already live in the city getting
a few more hives started next week it sells real
well but give away a lot of it as not to
exspecevive of a hobby

My dad did until age caught up with him. Mites and CC were pretty much the end, though. He had 9 hives max at age 85. good news, no arthritus from "sting therapy".

i used to run about 20 hives till loss rate hit about 75%, couldn't afford it, between the winter loss and CCD.....but they are a lot of fun....still keep an empty hive ready to catch a swarm if i find one....

(quoted from post at 01:31:02 04/13/13) I make plastic beehive foundations. We run about 800 hives also.

800 hives? Wow.......i am planning on buying out my father in law sometime soon ans i really want to go full time......i figure 500 will get me there and eventually i want to be running 1000 or so......been doing this for 7 years now and really want to go big......hate working for someone else. Any advise?

My wife wants some. Wants them partially so I'll get "bee sting therapy" for my arthritis and partially because they're "cool". I'm ambivalent.

I had one hive that I moved from a tree in the fall of 2011. I put them up in a new hive and everything last summer, fed them up until the end of Nov also. Full honey super on the top and a deep brood going into winter and they all died this winter.
Oh well, I have some honey to extract then set it in the woods hoping a swarm shows up now.
