Planting Potatoes

I have about 25 pounds in a paper bag that have started to sprout. Can I just plant those. I think that is what we did when I was younger on the farm.

I dont see any reason that they wont come up. I would cut the potatoes into pieces with eyes on them , let them set 2-3 days to heal or skin where they have been cut and plant. Rodney

Today's potatoes are sprayed with an inhibitor to prevent sprouting and typically not considered for seed potatoes, however, after a period of time they will sprout and my experience will produce a crop.

if they have sprouted already, they will grow. you can cut them or not, just be sure each piece has at least one eye. 2 oz is the "ideal" size for each piece.

are they from the supermarket? "table stock" has much looser standards in terms of diseases than "certified" seed. so you *may* be introducing diseases right from the start. that being said, if this is just a garden under the window sill, so to speak, don't worry too much since your livelihood doesn't depend on it. just don't plant anything that shows any sign of rot or disease. if disease shows up later (particularly Late Blight) you might consider killing them early to prevent spread to the neighbors (or even neighboring states!)

Yes. That is how we do it. If some of those sprouts break off, plant the sprout. It will grow also.

Potatos are tolorant of light frost ,so you could plant early and cover most of the green growth with compost.
