98 chevy farm truck repair

I"ve got to replace both the pitman arm and idler
arm on my 98 chevy k3500. I"m sure with the manure
and dirt road under there it"s going to be fun! I
was wondering, do you have to remove the steering
box to pull the pitman? Any thing else I need to
know before I tear it apart? Thanks for the help-
Morgan

Both are fairly easy jobs but I do second the motion for a pitman arm puller. Can be had at most parts stores for around $25 buck and well worth the money.

I have a 98 chevy k3500, I had to replace the pitman arm last fall, and I found that there isn"t enough room to use a pitman arm puller. the frame is too close to the gear box to get one on. I had to pull the gear box off- not really a big job- mike

You can unbolt the gear from the frame and push it towards the rear of the truck so the pitman arm clears the crossmember. Leave the hoses and steering column shaft connected.

Snap-On has the answer. Have one and it works GREAT... NO need to unbolt the steering gear, if you can buy, beg, borrow, or steal one of these:

Moog make a Problem Solver for the idler arm it is a better design than the one GM built. Air hammer will take the pitman off, but you may have to loosen the box for clearance.

a sharp rap to the pitman arm with a 4lb hammer will loosen it just leave the large nut on so it wont fall....
