alternator problem?? tractor of course

Put a GM 3 wire alternator on the Case 800.

Had been working fine for a couple years. Idiot light comes on and once started and running it would go off.

Started it over the weekend after setting all winter (outside unfortunately) and the light would not go off. Wiring looks ok.

What i'm not sure of is when at idle the light is dim and when rev'ed up the light gets brighter. Seems like if the alt isn't working the light would be the same regardless or is it partially working or a bad diode inside alt or ????

Thanks for the help

no need to guess at any of this.

a VOM across battery, and an ammeter inline with the alternator will tell you MUCHO.

check stati bat volts.. then startup.. check running volts. be creative.. try different rpm.

loot at ammeter.

now shut down.. see what ammeter does.

remember on a 3 wire.. #2 can be hooked to charge stud.. but #1 needs switched power.

never put a bulb or resistance or diode junction in line with #2.. it will make it charge at a higher rate...

I would take back off alt. and sand the 2 brush rings and make sure your brush springs are not sticking from rust from being outside all winter. sounds like enough corosion to make the brushes bounce at a higher speed. It is worth a try.

INCase,
You may need a resistor in the #1 (dash lamp) wire. If you just have a dash lamp in the circuit, sometimes there isn"t enough resistance to excite the alternator to start charging.
(See attached diagram).
I"ve used this set-up on three different makes/models of tractors.
Hope this helps,

Mad Electrical

It is very easy to test the regulator.

If you have the proper voltages at the three wire terminals, look for the D shaped hole in the back of the alternator. With the engine running ground the little tab that is inside the hole to the alternator case. That will bypass the regulator and force full output from the alternator.

my 3-wire delco did this after sitting in weather-it was rusty termanals on the 2-wire plug----cleaned, used electrical grease--
