Just got this hoe--it has just 4 shifting positions. My old plain 410 JD had 8 gears. Are all of the 410 C the same????

According to all the info I've heard is , you don't need the gears when you have a torque converter applying gobs of torque to lesser gears.. Ford 4500's were the same way back in the late 60's/early 70's with torque converters and 4 speed transmissions..It made the machine easier to run as you can't stall out the engine as you can with a clutch operated unit..

Just used my neighbors on Monday. It has a 4 speed, but I didn't play with different gears. 2 for loading, and 4 for taking it back home. Nice unit.

Most generally all hoes with torque converter have only 4 gears. I usually only use 2nd for general work and 4th for road gear. It's best to use 1st for loading or pushing. You can burn up a torque converter by using a higher gear.

I ran a couple of 310Ds. If you are in a loose pile, I usually used 2nd gear to load the bucket. If I was in something more packed I used 1st. 1st seemed to spin easier, way too much power. The 410 should have a little more power and weight.

I think the only difference the C has the shuttle lever (mechanical) where the D has it mounted on the steering column (electric) like a little blinker switch.

I now own a 580SE Case and mostly load piles in 2nd.
