Lost a part, buy another one, old one shows up.

I bought a new muffler clamp for my 450 a couple months ago off this site. Went to put it on the other day and wouldn't ya know it, I couldn't find the darn thing anywhere. I spent at least an hour cleaning/looking for that clamp and I gave up. Well I needed a new choke cable and something else so I ordered another one. As I took the sheet metal off the old girl guess what I found.....up new clamp still in the package sitting up in there. Oh well I needed a new one for the 300 anyway.

On side note, the "universal" choke cable is the correct length but it is to large for the hole in the dash. Is it common practice to drill the dash out some? Or should I go down to Case IH and get the correct one?

That's often the way I find stuff around here too!
As far as the cable goes, I can't say what's common on your tractors.
On other models people drill them out if they're not worried about originality.

That's up to you on the alteration. Round file is OK. Are you familiar with a "unibit"? Once you have one for thin metal, plexiglas, etc. you'll be hooked.

I ordered a couple of really long choke cables from a military surplus site with the idea I could cut them to length if I needed them. I've used one now and it's high quality all the way. It's nothing like the cheap knock offs we have available from the restoration sites. Jim

My father had a one row horse drawn corn planter, made at a foundry in a nearby town. In the mid seventies, we were tearing out the old horse stable, and down inside the partition between two stalls, I found a small burlap bag with some small parts in it. I asked Dad what they went to. He said
"I bought those parts for the corn planter some time in the forties, and when I came to put them on, couldn't find them, so I went and got some more."

And on the subject of choke cables:

I've got a JD compact utility tractor- wouldn't run, replaced some stuff, still no good, got the JD guy out, turned out to be the fuel shut-off module. $500 for a couple of farm calls and the parts, and I'm off and running.

Recalled that the fuel shut off broke on another diesel some years back. Bought a 6 dollar choke cable, cut it to size, and had it installed in 10 minutes. Seemed to shut off the fuel as well as the electronic module, too.

Not so sure I like this new-fangled stuff. . .
