Old, question for you

Old, I am about to plant 50 more pounds of potatoes and I want to try your method of just covering with straw. Do I just plow the ground, cut up the taters and put them on top of the soil? How close do you put them? How much straw do you cover them with? I am trying to make enough this year to can for us and our two sons.
Thanks, Richard
PS: I still have about 60 quarts from last year, but you can never have too many. I could live off taters and dry field peas a long time if I had to.

I only do a small area any more and put them say 6-12 inches apart from each other. I till the ground so as to be nice and flat throw them down and cover with 6 inches of straw. As they grow you can keep adding more straw and the taters will be in the straw when it comes time to dig them up. I have seen straw piled up over 3 foot tall and the guy would just pull the plant. This guy did this in the same box for well over a decade and had taters that way year round

Thanks again. I always enjoy your comments and your advice. I believe you and I think alike.
And I very much appreciate your service to our country.

Just be sure that as the weeks go by that you keep them covered or they will sunburn which spoils them. If it gets dry you will need to give them a lot of water.

I did a few months in Charleston SC and have lives in Athens TN which should be close to you. I picked up a Mother Earth News today you might want to look for Guide to Organic Gardening lots of good info in it

Used to plant wheat variety tests at the Clemson Experiment station in Charleston. Worst gnats in the world, but great seafood.
Have been to Athens TN to the Athens Plow Co. to pick up equipment. Beautiful country up that way.
