Tire question.

Can anyone tell me what the 235-80-16 on a tire means? I
know the 16 is for a 16 inch rim, but I can't remember what
the 80 is, maybe the width? What I'm wondering is can I put
235/75/16s on my truck? Thanks for the help.

235 is the width in mm, and the second number is the sidewall height. I think it's a percentage of the width but I could be wrong.

The tires you're asking about would just be a little smaller in diameter.

the 80 is a tallness factor expressed as a ratio ow carcus width to height from bead to tread. a 50 aspect tire is .5 times as high as wide. an 80 is .8 times as high as wide. a 78 series (as in g78-15) is .78 times the width.
The 235 is width across the widest part of the carcus when installed on the recommended rim in millimeters. Not exactly the tread width, but kinda. Jim

Thanks guys, I forgot all about the tire profile! Dident think about it long enought I guess! Lol

235 is 235mm tread width
75 means side wall heighth is 75% of the tread width (176.25mm)

235mm Wide, 75% of tread width.

If you remember back in the 60's,70's they would put tires they called 50's on hot rods or street cars I should say and they looked wide because they were so low profile. The side walls were only 50% of the tread width.

Go to this website www.csgnetwork.com/tiresizescalc.html,they will explain aspect ratio and you can calculate the difference in your tire dia to see how much it will effect your speedo.

I think a 265 75 16 is the same height. I went from
the 235 80 16 on my trailer to the old tires from
my pickup 265 75 16 load range E . Seem to be the
same height and a little wider.

I added a link to a calculator...here is what I found
235/80R16 circumference 93.8" revolutions per mile 675.4

235/75R16 circumference 96.7" revolutions per mile 655.1

235/80 is 96.7"
235/75 is 93.8"

If you are going from the 235/80/16s to 235/75s
the tire are almost 1 inch shorter, effectively your truck will be a 1/2" lower with the 235/75s.

Not a big deal in my opinion. Your "gear ratio" will go up too. Again, not enough to worry about.
I figured around 3%. If you had 3.73s it would put them to 3.84s.

Thanks Rick, I messed up, my truck has 265 on it right now, the spare is 235, and thats the size I had On the truck before the 265, I wanna go back to a narrower tire, so I can keep the 80, the height is fine. Problem I found is every tire company seems to me to be different size among same numbers! Thanks again for your help.

You are correct about sizes. There is variation among different manufacturers for same size tire.

If you click on the tire details on tirerack.com you will get actual height, width, tire weight and a few other things.
