Mrs redtoms car lost high gear this AM. Was fine one trip, went to go again made it to corner. Check engine light and traction control light came on. Went forward in low and worked in reverse and high slipped along after a fashion to home. 130k and front wheel drive only. Could this please o please be a cheap fix? Honest to God just made the last payment friday!!!

Well the traction control light means you have a bad ABS wheel sensor on the drive axle (front axle) or a bad wire leading to one of the ABS sensors. For that light to come on with you Check Engine light you may have just a bad connection at your ECM (electronic control module) Check the cheapest things first, blown fuse, abs wires most important over all other things your BATTERY VOLTAGE. These electronics in cars need to have a good battery.

If i recall right, you just changed a wheelbearing on this thing not to long ago?

Id be crawling under and looking to see if you dislodged a connection somewhere ie: abs plug on hub

If I had that problem with mine, I would send these guys an email or maybe even phone them. They have a radio show at 9am to 10 Eastern time, Terry has a tranny shop in Syr. NY and more than willing to help anyone out. He can tell you the possible problems and give you an estimate. even if you are in Mich.

Thanks for all your replies. I had no idea the ABS would shut down the trans. I brought home the scanner from work but I'm not too proficient with it-heck I don't know what I'm doing with it. It says TCC, trans control. I cleared the code. Pulled wheel and checked all ABS wires and plugs, checked all fuses. My 95 buick had ABS light and scanner specifically said "LH abs sensor" so I'd be surprised if my bearing job caused it. I did leave key on during brg job and completely drained batt but one week should have reprogrammed all that. It had run a week since wheel bearing before this happened. It works for now. Trouble is, now I can't trust it. I will try it til it fails again then probably take it to a "qualified" guy I use.
