Soaking seeds

i must admit, i do not know, however; previous years i soaked okra seeds for several hours and had poor results with faster or more rate of germination. last year i did not soak and nearly every seed came up so this year i am not going to soak. due to the construction of a sunflower seed (split hull) i doubt that soaking is needed.

(quoted from post at 16:32:18 03/23/13) Does it help promote germination ? Going to spread wildflower seeds as soon as it warms up , if it ever does ....

Depends on how you are going to plant them, I have pre-germinated native prairie mixtures, soaked them for three to four days in the bag. These seeds were seeded with a Finn hydromulcher. The seeds get soft and mechanical planters grind them to mush after pre germ so you can sew by hand or hydromulch but thats it.

After getting a Great Plains 1006NT drill I never pre-germed another bag. Proper seed to soil contact will bring them up just as fast as pre-germed seed spread on top. The pre-germed seeds had a higher seedling mortality rate and resulted in poorer stands. Get them seeds in the dirt.

When I grew Silver Queen sweet corn I would soak the seed in liquid fertilizer for about 20 minutes. Then I would plant the seed and pour liquid ferilizer on top of the seed. When the corn was well established about a foot high I would side dress the corn with grandular fertilizer. We would freeze some of the corn in seal-a-meal bags after cutting the kernels from the cob. They were huge ears of corn.

When the corn was finished I made a big corn shock and let it dry. Then I ran it thru the Troy Bilt Chipper/shredder. I would spred the
shredded stalks over the garden and plow them under. Hal

I never pre soak my seeds. I do however soak the ground after planting and keep it moist till after it well up. This is in the small garden. The big row crop garden I let nature handle it.
