Completely ot- camcorder battery

I figured someone here could help. I have an older Sony HCR-HC26. It's a basic Walmart cheapie camcorder, less than 4 years old and, of course, obsolete. The battery with it is an NP-FP30. It's weak at best. It appears it's been updated to the NP-FV series....I think. I can't really find anything saying for sure that's right. I also would like to get a lower priced alternative to a $100.00 Sony branded battery, but some places claim Sony cameras have a microchip system that stops "off brand" batteries from working. The Sony site was terrible as far as help went.

So, being that I'm a SLR camera sort of guy (technology stopped about 1985 for me!), can someone help me out here or direct me to someplace that can? :?:

I probably can't help but I can relate.

A few years ago we were using Blackberry phones. Blackberry had their "Chipped" batteries as well. When we needed one, we went to our local independent electronic shop and he ordered us one.

It came with a two battery receiver. You put the new battery in one side, the Blackberry battery in the other side and the Blackberry battery gave up all it's secretes to the new generic battery and it worked like a charm for probably 25% of the cost.

Mark, I know. First place I went. But 99% of those are off brands which is why I'm asking if they even work. Ebay provides an informational post about them NOT working and Amazon has a whole mess of reviews of the off brands NOT working. The rest of the actual Sony branded batts are used which brings it's own issues into play.

But, thank you for responding anyway. I hope some geek type can help me here.

I have had dealings with B&H photo with never a problem! Type in your battery number on their site search. Looks like they have an off brand for $60, but am not sure, as I have no idea what yours looks like.

Walmart.com, Ebay, Amazon.com, TigerDirect.com, Newegg.com, RadioShack.com, etc. are all possible sources. Cheap third party batteries are a crap shoot, some only last a year, some are even better than the original batteries.

BC, already been to Amazon. Other than some used batteries that may be Sony and get me back into the used deal, most of them are knockoffs, copies, not Sony brand. And the ones claiming to be by Sony don't look like Sonys and have a different voltage rating, 7.4 v instead of 7.2 like the batt I have now. And I still don't know about the micro chip thing. So thank you for trying to help, but I'm still wondering.
