The fence I installed about 25 or so years ago needs to be replaced. I am going to replace it with the same 3/4x6x 6ft Redwood Now 11/16x 5 1/2. The 11/16 x 5 1/2 boards at the lumber yard are fairly good. The 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 8 rails are total junk, and over priced. What if I use fir for the rails? Will fir hold up, the same as redwood? We don't gey a lot of rain here in S. Calif. Mostly sun. Thanks for any info. Stan

The redwood they sell now days is all 2nd growth. It doesnt last any longer than fir anyway. If there is any sap (white) wood on it , it wont last as long as fir. Probably a good idea to coat it with something.

Fir is probably not going to get half the duty life redwood would. If it were me I would change to pressure treated yellow pine. Just try not to pick up any fresh from the factory and dripping wet.
