Just thinking today about things about thirty years ago due to a recent death in the family. I remembered the neighbor up the road had his auction and he had the nicest 1972 4020 diesel I ever saw which he had bought new. This tractor was certainly pampered and kept clean and his tools were small for it. I don't recall the hours exactly but I doubt it had 2500 hours on it. A long story made short was I was in college and mom and were struggling financially so somebody else got to buy it for 10,000 dollars. I guess the good news is I know where the tractor is now and think it will be for sale again in the next few years. The second owner really did not push it either but I really wanted back in the day. Hopefully I could have the money for this coming time. As pessimistic as I have been at times I guess it gives me something to dream about. |

A little much for me. It's got to be at a price I can live with and get work out of it. I am not even 50 yet so it's too early given my finances for a 20,000 dollar toy. The wife would be pretty perturbed, also. When the one I am talking about sells I will just note the tractor serial number and buyer for the next time should it go too high which is likely. I've talked about finding Grandpa's 3010 which will be impossible without a serial number so that ship has sailed and then some.

I agree with you, I wouldent spend $20000 for it either, I was just pointing it out to you. But if you can get the one your talking about that sounds like a nice deal. Good luck with it.

A JD 1972 4020 will bring $12-15 K right now in its farm cloths. Real rough ones will bring more than $10 K. Sharp painted up ones will hit the mid $20 K price. They are selling too.

Hi If you can get that money for 4020's I'll buy all the good ones round here in Manitoba and ship them to you a semi load at a time . They are selling for a lot less than that here, Not many people want them now round us. what are they worth with no 3 point round you, not many up here have it. are 4010, 3010/20's making anything as they are a hard sell here too. there is a very nice restored 30 series close to here. last I saw $8500 Can$, or less now would probably buy that. Nobody wants it either and its sat 6 or 8 months now. Regards Robert

Tractorhouse.com alone has almost 100 4020's listed by dealers for under 10K. Dealers ask more money than individuals selling. I bet if you asked the average guy to sell his for $15k they couldn't get rid of it quick enough.

JD Seller has a point as people go crazy over last year made 4020's. I would have to say the tractor would have to be restored to being fancy to bring that and the family aspect is minimal. The original owner has no surviving close family and the other guy's kids have never taken an interest plus there are tractors this guy bought new himself if they were. As said before I can not and will not outbid a fanatic. I can not buy this strictly for a toy at this time in life.

Right now I will just ride it out till the time comes as I need to save for it anyways. The guy is up there in years and it will only aggravate him to talk about selling it now. It will depend who the auctioneer is, too. One farmer really got shorted by hiring an auctioneer who had no following in more modern equipment. I've got think about the farm business so I have to buy it at a price that is allowable for its size, age and features. I doubt I would go past twelve so somebody else will have to pay the high teens or whatever.

Odd - I've been to two recent sales that had a 4020 on them. Both were in really good shape. One brought $3800 and the other $4200......Owners were a BIT "miffed", but it was an absolute sale.

Note we said 1972 JD 4020. In 1970 there where many updates to the 3020/4020s. I would bet that the ones you saw sell where older than 1968. There where a few updates in 1968 too. The JD 4020s where made from 1964 to 1972. The last year,1972, models will bring much more money than even the 1971/1973 models. It is a collector thing. Everyone wants the last year they where made. |

Seems like last year 4020s have been hitting $20,000 if they were advertised right. I know a guy who gave away a Waterloo Boy 30 years ago. It was sitting out in the pasture and a local collector came by and asked him if he could have it. Now there is one that got away.

I don't think this one will hit 20,000 dollars when the time comes. The tractor is mechanically excellent to my knowledge but the appearance has slipped down so it looks ordinary for a 40 year old tractor. I won't be offering 20,000 dollars and hopefully there will not be bunch of sucky financial years with the farm but we shall see.

4020s were great tractors but I agree that $20,000 is stupidly high. Good luck.
