OT--Had a good laugh with an old friend

Yesterday, I had an old neighbor friend stop by my home for a visit. During our long conversation of old times, he asked me if I still had the Craftsman Chainsaw. I responded that I did and he started laughing while reminding me of what happened many years ago.
Close to twenty eight years ago, I was clearing land and using a Craftsman 3.7 cubic inch chainsaw. I came to the house to sharpen the chain and he was across the road, working on his truck. I went over for a short break and a chat. He looked in the bed of my truck and saw the chainsaw. He asked me how I liked it and after I got through bragging, he bet me $20.00 that he could saw through a large log, that was beside his truck, with his little Remington 14" saw faster then I could.
I laughed and said, "I won't take your money but will show you how it cuts. I cranked the saw up as he cranked his, and we started cutting--or at least he did. I watched, in amazement, as his little Remington sawed through the log--much faster then my Craftesman!
I knew immediately knew why my saw would not cut---chain was installed backwards!
After sharpening my chain, I decided it was time for a bar flip and I just removed the bar with chain still on it and tightened it up.
He wouldn't take my money so we had a good laugh and I was a little embarassed.
I wish he had forgot that! LOL!
Good to have special friends!

Good friends are a blessing.
Had a moment like that with my nearest neighbor who is a good friend. Heard him cutting up a large oak that had fallen during a thunderstorm (you know that was a few years ago, almost forgotten what a thunderstorm is now) with a chainsaw he had just bought. Cut for about 15 min, silence for 5 min, then sound of the saw starting then dying. Heard that sound about 4 times so I went over to investigate. He told me the saw starts good but when I hit the throttle it dies. I could see the kickback lever was tripped. Told him I could solve the problem in 2 seconds. He said no way. I reset the lever, told him to try it & of course it ran like a champ. His previous saw was so old it didn't have the kickback lever on it. We had a good laugh over that.
I won't go into the ones he has on me though.

I've been there = My new saw has a kickback lever. Sometimes resetting it requires disassembly of the side if the saw. Not a good setup. Thanks to OSHA. They've improved my life in so many ways.

About 10 years ago I used to drive a '63 Buick Riviera as my daily driver. It had the reverse lug nuts on one side. A tire went low once, so I pulled into a tire store/garage to have them remove the tire and check it. A young hot shot mechanic in the back was assigned to take the tire off. After a long time of trying to figure out how to take the real hubcap off, he could not get those lug nuts loose. Of course he didn't know they were reverse thread. His air wrench would not get them off. He even dialed up the pressure and tried a few other air wrenches. All he was doing was tightening those lug nuts. I kept my mouth shut, I thought it was so funny. Finally, after about 15 minutes, an older mechanic with grime under his nails and rough hands came over and shook his head at the vocational school grad, flipped the reverse switch on his wrench, handed it back to the kid and said "Try again." The lug nuts came right off. By the grin on the senior mechanic's face, he was thoroughly amused.

I used to have a porsche 914.I used to bring it to full service gas stations for gas just to see the attendant walk around it a couple of times looking for the fill cap.The gas tank was located under the front hood.

I know a guy, retired Army mechanic who filled the crank case of an air cool VW engine with antifreeze. I remind him of that every time I talk to him. Just always ask him if he ceeked his aoolant lately.

Isn't it a hoot how you pick up conversation with a good friend eventhough you havn't seen one another for years.
I recently saw a friend from long ago feeding cows close to the road and pulled over to talk. I yelled to him that he best get out of that pasture before the man that owns them comes by. He didn't recconize me and walked toward me saying these are my *&%@# cows and I will do as I ^$%# please with them. I said you are a liar and I believe you deserve an old fashion arzz kicking.
Just before making a new gate through the fence he recconized me and we talked for over an hour then exchanged cell #s before departing.

You should have said "I'll take that bet-- but just a minute while I fix the chain", then proceeded to put it on right and blow the doors off his little saw! (you could have set him up thata way)

When I worked at a Ford dealership there was one particular tire dealer in town that bought a lot of Ford truck wheel covers from us, you know, the ones with the fake lug nuts? Some fool would try to take them off with an air wrench!

Even with the compression release those 3.7s required a strong arm to crank. But other than that they were wood cutting machines! (If you had the chain on correctly) LOL
You know you have some years behind you when you start talking about something that happened 20/30 years ago!

That would have be a good idea---except I didn't know the chain was backwards!!! First and only time I have done that!

I am 67 years old and have worked on small engines for over 50 years---
Today I have Stihl, Husqvarna, and Dolmar chainsaws, and they will not do what the 3.7 Craftsman will do. Yes the newer saw will outcut the 3.7 and are lighter but they will not start the chain to cutting with the saw idling and lightly pressed into the bark.
That's torque and I have never operated another saw that would do that.
