I am going to change the pressure hose on my power steering pump. I will probably empty the pump reservoir doing this. Does my Dodge take any special fluid, or can I use the generic brand at the parts store? My MF power steering pump uses the same oil as the transmission. Would this work? Thanks,Stan

Depends on how they are set up from the factory. If you still have the glovebox manual it should specify. Of course all vehicle companies have their own part number on lubricants so they can charge you more, but unless otherwise specified, I would use power steering fluid. I generally buy mine at a parts store.

Stan, I use ps fluid from the Dodge dealer in mine…..not much more expensive the parts store. I think ATF is ok as well.
Good luck finding a PS pressure hose for a Ram. Every place I went to told me they are on factory back order, I ended up paying $185 at the dealer (Canadian prices!) I guess I could have shipped one from US or had one made locally, but I needed the truck.
Not sure with 96, but on a 99, a good 18mm flare nut wrench is a big help.

It took a while to find the right size. 18 mm was it. I found a hoses at pepboys for 17.00 seams thedealer was a little pricy.stan

The manual says NOT to use ATF fluid. I used to use it and the pumps did not last as long. I switched to JD low viscosity hydraulic oil. It is what JD uses in all the Hydros on the combines. It is cheaper than the power steering fluid.
