Here we go!

I posted a few weeks ago about my horses not shedding, I said I wonder if it's a sign of something brewing! Well there saying were in for a good size snow event anywhere from 6-12 inches tonight and threw out the day tomarrow. Last march a bit later that this we were in the 80s that weather wreaked havoc on the apple trees, than April was back to cold. Oh well we"ll see what we get, it's been par for the course this year, 6-8 inches of snow, than we hit 50 and were back to bare ground! I remember winter as a kid in the 80s seemed like we would get snow in November and it lasted until April!

It has been a nasty winter up here in the St. Law. River valley. We have had colder and we have had snowier, but in terms of challenging weather, this year it has been rough: Since Sandy: Two massive windstorms, Two massive (1'+ snowstorms, with one more if you include the one that is coming, ice storms, bouts of heavy "wet concrete" snow knocking our power, then sprinkle in deep thaws, and three weeks below zero after one thaw, the unplowed roads (this killed two of my neighbors), and shoddy weather forecasting, I will sure be glad to see spring.

We just got a little over 2" of rain here in Illinois yesterday and last night. It lightened and thundered last night until 11pm or so. We had snow flurries all day until about 3pm them had light sleet. Some parts of Missouri had hail.
I just tilled up the garden on Saturday, it was a little moist on top but underneath it was powdery but now I'll have to wait again. I watched your forecast for up your way Jay and I heard 6-10".

Our horses here in S.E. Ohio are shedding like madd. I sure hope it's a good sign that warm weather is on the way LOL. Keith

Our horses are not shedding much to speak of yet. Kinda glad with us having the coldest average temperatures for the month of February and so far in March. I was upset somewhat last spring when Noe of my mares caught on the first breeding. I was hoping for some March foal. Nature has a way of protection our animals I guess. I have one mare that is looking uncomfortable walking around. Should be some time late April though.

The earth is warming: BUT... not because of man. Climate is cyclical. When the Vikings visited America in the middle ages Europe was much warmer than it is now.Called it Vinland, for all the grapes that grew in what is now Newfoundland. Also how did Greenland get its name? Not a lot of green there even now. There was, once.
Global warming just another excuse for big government to meddle in our lives and people like Ozone Al Gore to get rich talking about it.

My horses are shedding some but I am a good bit south of you. In the last couple days we have gotten 2-4 inches of rain depending on who you talk to or watch on the news. Guess your getting what we just got Saturday and Sunday just snow instead of rain. So far here March is been coming in like a lion so maybe it will go out like a lamb

It been cold here, news said above average temp for the south and below average for the north. My horses usually start shedding pretty good in mid febuary, but they aren't budging this year, still wooly.

I'd compare notes on the shedding, but I have not paid a visit to the farm in awhile, likely the same, every year is little different.

I suppose we don't actually need this next bit of snow, mud season was practically over as the frost has been out of the ground since that rain last week and maybe a bit sooner, so at least it might get saturated but should drain off quickly.

The contrast from year to year end of winter is a stark one, especially compared to last year. I've still got the stove going morning and night, we had a little break there, but the cold is back. Usually won't be long after the 17th, and we really can't complain too much about this winter, will be nice to finally get next years wood done by April, so much easier with the log splitter now.

THe frost sure didn't come out of the ground here. The cold weather all week sent it even deeper into the ground. The snow just settled and became ice, which you can walk on without breaking through now. It was 12F this morning. We've had a raw nasty east wind all day at 10-15mph. Temp up to 30 as I post but windchill is at 21.

Let it come. I just brought in four days worth of wood with the Kubota bucket loader, and dumped it beside the wood boiler in the garage. Also went down cellar and filled the dumb waiter with a third face cord of 19" wood for the fireplace, and hit the button to houst it up next to the fireplace.
The wifey put in a beef roast with lots of garden vegies in the crock pot this afternoon, SOO let it SNOW.

Mine were shedding pretty good two days ago, they were walking around picking it up and putting it back on this morning........decided they were mistaken.......thats what they said when I went to feed before work.

Dang buffalo gnats were about to drive em nuts in the warmth over the weekend.

Jay,
It just started here. Temp 28F humidity 76%, and wind average at 7.2mph. Real fine snow coming down hard. getting whiter as I post at 6:33 PM.

I agree, I brought in a bunch of wood for the boiler in the basement, and some smaller 20" pieces for the kitchen stove if it's even needed. I'm
Just gonna plug in my tractor with loader on it tomarrow, I was to lazy to put the plow back on the ATV for the 3rd time this winter, when the snow melts away like is did the last 3 times this winter after storms, I take the plow off! I guess I should have learned by now to just leave it on! Lol

Funny how different it can be in a short distance, I drove a t-post into the ground today, no frost at all.

It has been a long winter in the St Law Valley, eh? Whereabouts are you? I'm north of Gouverneur. Sorry to hear about your neighbors. Was that the father and son a couple weeks back?

Brett how far north? I have friends in Fowler. They shop and attend church in Gouveneur.
