Need help on propane issues

I am putting some kind of propane heater/furnace in my farm shop. (wood is done)!!! It is about 1000 sq feet. Any suggestions on the type? I do not like the open flame wall mount and not sure those 5 brick type will heat the shop in winter?
2. Can any of you tell me about buying propane? Some say to get your own pony/pig tank? Seems around here you pay the per gallon price and that is it not much different between suppliers. They furnish a tank.
3. I am not to worried about cost as its limited use and would be small scale. Thanks to all who can advise.

Got one hanging from the ceiling for over 20 years. Works great! Insulated chimney pipe going out. Rent the tank for $20 a year. Probably should have bought it. Propane is $1.40 a gallon here, E. S.D.

Check out www.reverberray.com or spaceray.com. my son-in-law and his Dad both raise Turkeys. His Dad is remodeling his buildings using infared heaters from Reverberray. The price was very reasonable for a heating unit. Less than $1000.00 per unit. It would heat your 1000sq.ft. very easy. No openflame.

Menards sells Beacon-Morris, made in US last I checked. 45 or 75,000 btu depending on how well insulated you are. I have a very similar MrHeater that came from Lowes, all hang from the ceiling and have 4" vent out the wall. We have nat. gas so I don't have a tank and it's very inexpensive. Mine seems very safe and efficient, but a little noisy. When it comes on I go in the house for coffee!

Get your own tank.

Get a VENTED heater to help keep the moisture down.

I have a Mr. Heater hanging vented heater that works fine. I forget the size ? maybe they still only make one size ? I got one when they first came out.I heat a bigger area then that in my well insulated pole building.

I heat my shop with a little propane furnace. The exhaust is just dumped right back into the shop. It works great.
I put a little wall unit in a little room I built in the corner of another barn. Apparently the room was too well insulated/tight, because everything got wet.
I guess my shop is big/loose enough that moisture had never been an issue.

Radiant is the best way to go unless you have low ceilings. It will cook your brains. It's good because it warms you and objects up but doesn't heat the air so you don't have to wait to long for things to warm up.

Get a direct vent wall furnace. They draw the combustion air from outside and exhaust outside thru a coaxial duct. Easy to install and the flame is fully contained. Graingers has them.
Get on it as of May, sales of heaters is about to be restricted to high effecency heaters!!$$$

Another vote for reverberray. Shop is 36 by 48 with 19 foot ceiling. I keep thermostat at 45 when not working, 57 while working. I use about 250 gallons per winter- near St. Louis Mo.

Installed in 2008, only issue so far has been a dirty flame sensor which happened this winter.

I'm happy with it. I own my tank and shop around for L.P. price. It can vary 20 cents/gal. in my area. My favorite dealer will match the area low price and keeps my tank painted.

Yet, another vote for reverberray. I have a very similar setup to Eric in Il. Dont have a picture handy.

40x60x14. Keep it at 45F, turn it up to 60F. It will toast your head a little if you stand directly under it. Just wear a ball hat.

Mine seems very efficient, I have one wall that I am finishing the insulation on as I type this. So propane use should go down after that is done.

I wouldnt go with a wall mount unit unless it is vented, if you use it all the time it will dump a whole bunch of moisture into your shop.

I heat my shop with unvented propane. I have never had any moisture. Never have frost or condensation on the windows. I just don't understand this moisture with propane business. I know that water is a product of combustion as it is with gasoline, but the air is so dry that no two molecules can get together to produce a drop of water.

We just had radiant heaters installed in the firehouse, and they are a huge difference over the older convection heaters. They're also supposed to be cheaper to operate.

I always liked a Modine heater for a shop. The radiant heater is good but it would be hot under it and cold everwhere else. The Modine heater is fan forced and distributes heat more uniform across the shop.

1st off BUY a tank, 500 gal is a good size to own, talk to the propane truck drivers in your area. Almost every time someone puts up a new heated shop, the drivers get to see the inside and get to know the heating systems. They usually know what type heater works well in your area and where to get the best deal on one.

I have always found that Propane seems to be 40-50 cents a gallon cheaper when you own the tank vs rent one and they know you cant go to another supplier.

First off I see no advantage to owning your own tank, this house has had LP since 1965. And curently I have 4 of the unvented wall heaters in it (And as they are not in a sleeping room they are legal) that part has a furnace. And I do not have any moisture problems, fact is wife says the air is too dry. But if would try to add moisture to make it comfortable that way then oll mr aurther will kick in harder. I hurt enough without that.

I rented a tank. It takes a lot of cents per gallon to pay for a big tank. Rent is cheap or even free, if the usage meets their threshold.
They will replace the old tank if it gets dangerous or obsolete.

No opinion on type of heater to use.
