We have a 2001 JD 4600 with about 700 hrs on it. I have always used JD 5-30 oil in it but I plan to switch to a common 15-40 diesel oil, mainly because the local JD dealer had to sell out to a big chain. I have been planning on using Mobil Delvac 1300, or Shell Rotella. What does anyone suggest? any good/bad experience? If we put more hours on it per year I would consider synthetic, but at less than 100 hrs a year I don"t think it would be a good idea. Thanks in advance!

I would read all the specs on the old bottle and make sure to choose a new oil that is equal or better than the JD 5-30 oil that you have been using.

I have been using Shell Rotella T 0-40 in my JD 2550 and 2130 for a couple of years now. The local JD dealer showed me how JD recommended it, and because it is synthetic, you can use it year around and you can go 50 percent longer between oil changes than with a normal oil. There is a rumor around here that Shell makes JD's oil for them, so it is supposed to be the same. Before using 0w40 I used 15w40 in the summer and 0w30 in the winter. I wouldn't be afraid of any Shell oil, and I would use what your dealer recommends for your areas temperatures and how hard you work the tractor.
