I have a 1994 F150 6cly. 4x4. It has 94K on it and has never been babied but never beat either, Today I used the 4 wheel drive and when I pushed on the breaks I heard and felt a "clunk" in the front end and noticed the 4x4 didnt work. Any one else run into this??

it was working in the last week, not sure if the clunk coinsides with it not working for sure, It has automatic hubs and has the shifter on the floor to engage.

Not all that familiar with your particular model, however, I"ll try.

If you can, inspect the outer u-joints on the front axles, definitely a place for a "clunk" and then no 4x4.

Also, if your auto-hubs are worn to the point of clunk, it"s sometimes possible to swap the right to left hub and fix the engagement issue.

Hopefully the repair is self eveident and inexpensive.

I had those automatic hubs on my 92 F-250,they clunked all the time. I never knew if they were in or out. I changed them to manual hubs, no more problems.

The auto hubs often didnt' last this long. With no 4x4 right now, would say that is the problem. At least you can change them without any expensive tools. Not really any quick fix, replacement, or replace with manuals as stated.

When you pull the shifter into 4x4, the front driveshaft turns, turning the front axles, activating the automatic hubs. You must be at a stop, and then inch forward till you feel them lock in, then you're good to go. If you pull it in and hammer the gas, the slack in the system will snap the hubs in very hard and break stuff.
The hubs will stay engaged until you take it out of 4wd and travel at least 10 feet in the opposite direction you were going when you pulled it out.
I have a 92 F150 with original auto hubs and they still work very well, but you have to know how they work and be easy on the engagement.
