What's for dinner

Can not eat meat on Friday this time of year. Not really a problem where I live because I can have fish or shellfish.
So we made do with this..............

Like you we are abstaining from meat on fridays as well. We been going to the local Eagles club for the fish rry. All you can eat cod with tators, veges, roll, and pie with 2 drink options. If the drink options arent what you want, you can get a beer or pop for $1. Good eats. Won the 50/50 for the second week in a row. $131. last week and $106 this week.

Last night I ate light because of a big lunch so I made a nice reuben sandwich....it hit the spot.......earlier in the week I had a half chicken..deep fried..with macaroni salad..don't usually have breakfast but had part of a steak left over from Sunday, so made a classic breakfast earlier in the week....

Typical 12" cast iron skillet...I think the angle of the sides and the angle of the pic, makes it look deeper than it is.........its probably only 2½ inches........

My kids and grandkids are over from east of the mountains, so us Protestants had turkey, dressing, squash, scalloped potatoes, brocolli, French bread, green salad, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. Say what you will about that woman, she can sure cook. YU-UMMM.

Those bugs look mighty, mighty good, John! But that little pile wouldn't even get me started. I haven't had any yet this season, but I'll be having some soon. Bon appetit!

Sears sent me to Atlanta, GA. one time for a weeks training and there was a man in the class from Louisiana. He told us how they made crawfish stew and gumbo, and some other dishes, man, made my mouth water!

Are them crawfish any good tasting? I've never had them. Seen them in some restaurants but could never get myself to try one.

The tails taste great, but I've never been able to suck the heads. I guess I live a little too far North of LA. :p

Why can't you eat meat on a Friday? I bet it tastes as good on a Friday as any other day.

As a youngster I used to catch crayfish down in the Los Angeles River and make pets out of them, better than a Goldfish. Then in the mid-1980's some friends and I went to a local natural spring, dove down & caught several dozen crayfish and had us a fish-fry, picked some fresh fruit from an old abandoned orchard on the same property to go with our crayfish. Can't do that anymore as that whole area is now part of a Nature Preserve. Great eating, just like a mini Lobster.

John B it is like anything else. Some like them some do not. I could not even start to try and tell you it taste like ....... Has a taste all its own. If you ask most that will not eat them they will say because it is a bug or something simular.
It is also about how you cook them. I love shrimp. Had some while I was in Rantoul Ill one time and it was the worst thing I ever put into my mouth because it was not cooked correctly.

Lets put it this way...........
They must be good at least to us locals. I got these from a carry out fish market already boiled for $2.59 per lb. While the store sells other things they make the bulk of their income for the year in the short Crawfish season. With crawfish to sell they would close the doors.

samn40 I am Catholic like most in this area. We party hard right threw Mardi Gras day (Fat Tuesday) Then on Ash Wednesday we start lent and fast till Easter. One of the ways we fast is by not eating meat on Friday.
In days of past they never ate meat at all during lent.

Alright quit posting these food pix you guys are making me hungry!!!!!

I love crayfish and lobster. Just the tails and claws. Don't try to convince to eat anything else on them.

Today for me its goose breast wrapped in thick cut bacon. Most of my food involves bacon or bacon grease. Don't tell the wife I do have a secret affair with it. I think she is on to me though, she found the 6 pounds I have stashed in the freezer and two big Mason jars of grease in the fridge. Mmmmm. Bacon.

Back in the day, in public elementary schools (very few area Catholics), fish was served to all every Friday. I was told it was out of respect for the religion.
