Some of you who have been country music fans for a long time will remember Claude King, who had several top ten songs back in the 60s, including the No. 1 hit "Wolverton Mountain". He also did "Big River, Big Man", "The Comancheros", "Sam Hill", and "Mary's Vinyard".
He died today at age 90, here in Keithville, La.
Like so many others, he started out on the Louisiana Hayride. His success never pulled him from his basic roots: he lived his entire life right here in this same semi-rural community, about three miles up the road from my place. In his old age he enjoyed hanging out at the Farmer's Coop and drinking coffee with the farm folks that came in. I always intended to get him to autograph one of his CD's, but never did.
