Getting ready for spring

Some of you may have remembered the drain/shore my 10 year old son dug in my garden last Saturday. Well, today I went to the local quarry and got 4 tonne of clean 2 inch stone. I tipped them from the trailer into the power link box and then into the shore....I hate shovelling stones!. The linkbox was then used to backfill the spoil and I then just about managed to plough the garden. Potato ground always ploughs up wet and sticky in Ireland, but this is the worst I have ever seen in this garden. Maybe something to do with the wet year we just had????
Anyhow it is ploughed now, all I need is some sunshine, some rain and some more night frosts to mellow the soil before cultivating for this season's spuds.

Totally different soil than what we have here in the states. If we plowed anything that wet,we would have concrete the rest of the year.Only time we can plow wet is in the fall and winter freezing will generally take care of it.

I was also surprised at that soil...It was bone dry on top. We have had nearly 3 weeks of beautiful spring weather and no rain.... I would say our soil is similar to most other places including the States, the diffference is in the drying . We will (usually) get some rain, sunshine and frost to break the soil down slowly so it doesn't bake into concrete. Sometimes we do get fast drying and you cannot make the ground ready, so we wait for rain, then cultivate the next day or two.

Sort of. A French drain I recall had the large stones right to the surface to facilitate rapid intake of water. Useful around buildings, or in a drive or parking area.
What Sam did was more like some of the stone ditches around here. Sometimes the stone were set so as to try to make a throat. Sometimes they were just thrown in the trench. Then covered with dirt and worked just like the rest of the field. Only hopefully better drained!

That's a great job for a backwards loader! Your 135 looks better than museum quality. What year and serial number is it? I have a 65 UK 135 serial #F 3742. I believe the F stands for Multi-power as it is fitted on the tractor. Never had a problem with it.

Hi Sam, cold and foggy here at Newark. Forcast rain Saturday and Sunday just because I have got a ploughing match both days. MJ

I really like the 3 pt loader, looks simple and inexpensive. How sore is your neck after using it all day? I know mine would be killing me.

Lets us know how the drain works.
