Char-Lynn Power Steering Leak

The power steering unit ( torque generator?) on my JD 70 is leaking around the shaft by the steering wheel. I was told that there is just a o-ring inside that needs replaced. Can I take the end of the unit off while it is still installed on the steering column or will pieces jump out and disappear? Chris

It isn't just an O-ring. Been there done that. If you replace it with a regular o-ring you will be doing it again in a week. Don't ask how I know that. O-rings on either shaft end are actually a square if you look at the cross section.

If it is mounted the same as it is on the Farmalls (shorter "nose" toward the steering wheel) you can just pull that off, replace the ring and then put it back together.

Call these people and describe what you need. They are easy to work with and will mail the rings to you quick.

I would take it off, depending on which side is leaking if you pulled it off still mounted you could have quite a mess on your hands.

The bolts on one side hold 80% of the thing together and you wouldn't want it falling apart.

The seals you get now are "quad seals" not just simple old O-Rings.

I just did mine, I haven't tested t yet bit it was a pretty simple process.

I just did 2 of them this winter. I used seal kits avaliable from the web. As stated they use quad seal orings you can get from mcmaster carr for the shaft seals. There was one other o ring in the middle when you split it and 2 small o rings at the manifold block. Not a hard job for the average guy. Make a mark down the side to be sure not to get all the parts out of phase with one another.

Remove it. Prolly a 15 minute job. Make sure you have the "swivel" connector below it to connect to the lower shaft. Without that you have the side and longitudinal forces on the TG
