Round baler belt length

If you have a baler belt clamp fail, why can't you just cut it off
and install a new clamp?

My current belts are connected with Clipper Wire Hook
terminations. Belts are 7" 3 ply diamond, 402" long (JD 375).

I have a couple with about 1" or so that has worn out and is no
longer connected. The remainder of the 7" width is in very
serviceable shape.

The actual part of the belt being currently used is 1/2" on each
side for a total of 1" of belt length.

If I were to have a problem and just cut off the existing wire
clips, prepare the surface and install a new clamp, I would only
shorten the belt by 1". With a length of 400" that's only a length
reduction of 0.25%. I'd bet the belt stretches more than that as it
wears in.

So, question is, what's the big deal? Will it work?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes,I do it all the time. I just lay a square on it,cut it as close to the old lacing as I can with a utility knife and put in a new Clipper lacing.

agree with comments below, this is from my Vermeere ops manual

According to JD area service manager way back when I worked for a JD dealer JD rd baler belts shrink not stretch with use.

Yes belts can be relaced a time or two without ill affects. What happens when belts aren't real close to same lengths are belt & rollers wear on each other from "trying to run" different distances.

You would get much longer life out of the laces if you would change to the alligator type laces with the solid connecting pin instead of the clipper type.

WOW. You guys are right here for me. Thanks.

Yes I'm cheap now. I am retired and only have a small place and all the fancy stuff, like new diamond 3 ply alligator clipped belts for my baler with new tires are things of the past. The old belts on this one hopefully will do (the belts are in great shape, just a couple of rounded corners on the clips) and the tires are bald but ok for what I need.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

For all you guys snowed in, just kick back and enjoy life. The moisture has been passing me by somewhat. Pool is still about 4' low but ground moisture is there for planting. I need to get the pool up to survive the summer. I have 2 stockings of fingerling catfish last spring that I surely don't want to loose.

Right now it's 2pm and only 45, wind is sharp out of the N, but the sun is shining. That helps the attitude. Ready to get going this spring.

Back when I used to work in the Mines, we had long-line conveyor belts that had over a dozen splices in it, and was told that the number of splices didn"t matter until it got to the point that there were more splices than there was belt.

I think that's why they call that a "Dutchmans splice".

That's when you take a length out,and put a new length in with a splice on each end.

Seems to me my NH manual says the belts all have to be with in a certain length, but if they break and get too short, you have to do the two piece splice deal.
