I have a Ford 9N that was running great. All of a sudden the only way it will run is with the choke pulled all the way out, but has no power to do any work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Too much air or too little fuel. It usually turns out to be the latter, and its because its clogged up between the tank and the sediment bulb. Remove sediment bulb, and see how much flow you get out of the tank- it needs to be a steady stream, not just dripping.

When you have to choke an engine to get it to run it's starving for fuel. By choking it you actually close off the air flow to match what little fuel it's getting.

On the N series ford it is common that if you have weak spark it will do just as your is doing. Check to make sure your spark is a nice blue/white and will jump a 1/4 inch gap at each of the 4 plug wires. Next check your plugs and make sure you do not have a few fouled out. If you do not already have auto lite 437 plug in it put a set in. If your spark is good and your plugs are good next check your air cleaner and make sure it is not full of ice or dirt or lacking oil. Then pull the crab drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas out the bottom of the carb. Post back what you find and also ask in the 9N/2N/8N forum below

Check the voltage to the coil. Ballast resistors fail and cut power to the coil. This happened to a friend's 9N. No power and only ran with choke out.

Main power jet is probably plugged with crud or your fuel tank outlet has crud blocking the fuel flow. Use a good flashlight to see if you can see the fuel outlet. Also disconnect the gas line at the carb and use a clean container to catch the gas. Should see a full stream of gas from the tank. Hal

It's not a weak spark.

If the fuel flow wasn't restricted, the engine would flood after a few seconds with the choke pulled and a weak spark.

Here's what I did: Removed and cleaned shut-off valve and sediment bulb, then reinstalled everything. I put gas back in tank, hit the starter and it started right up. 9N is happy again.Even went out and pushed some snow.
Thanks for the help.Bud
