MY Nephew a Senior plays baseball for Charleston Southern here in Charleston. In a game yesterday with the Citadel he got a hit and running hard to try and beat the throw the first baseman standing in the baseline found it necessary to crouch low and send him for a flip landing on his shoulder. Broke his wrist and and tore ligaments in his shoulder. I don't think he will play again.

Sorry to hear that. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Like BA said, with the medical advances, he may be able to play again. But after an injury like that, he may not want to.

I hate the fact that this happened to your nephew. Things like that are why none of my kids played high school sports. The "win at all cost" attitude in today's high school sports make them too dangerous for my kids to play in.

Know a guy five years younger than me. He was a big time high school football player. He has walked with a cane from the damage to his knees since he was in his early thirties. So a few weeks of high school glory in trade for a life time of limping around. He will tell you it was the greatest thing he ever did too.

Modern medicine may heal you nephew back to perfect shape. He may also have pain in his shoulder or wrist the rest of his life. Not worth the risk to play a game to me.

Was the perpetrator disciplined? He should have been thrown out of the game.Or better still off the team for unnessary roughness.IMHO,that kind of thing is unacceptable!

Its a dangerous world out there, whether your throwing bales cutting wood handling livestock something is bound to happen. High school and college sports are indeed inherently dangerous. Even cheerleading has its injuries. Hope your nephew mends well. Stuff will happen no matter what game your in. gobble

I hope he heals up to play another day. Our son tore a shoulder up last year in wrestleing and was back at it this year full speed so there is hope.

RBnSC,

Sure hope he heals well, and can do whatever he chooses in life. It is amazing how young ones can heal - though I'm sure he will notice effects from it later in life.

Its been 25+ years since I played ball. If I remember correctly, the runner has the right to "run through" the baseman, in another words flatten the basemen, if he is blocking the base.

I played catcher my entire life, and had a fair share of collisions at home with base runners. If someone was coming in hard, I left my mask on too, one more layer of protection. Most times I came out the winner due to size, I also tried to avoid the collision by tagging in from the size, not trying to be a roadblock to the plate.

If the play was not going to be close, I got the heck out of the way. We played hard, but never tried to hurt someone. Now days it seems taking out the other team is part of the game.

Hope your nephew heals up good.
