1910 farmhouse

A couple of our tractor friends came over from England for the weekend so we took them to see our Folk Museum. This is a living museum on a 90 acre estate, where old houses from all over Northern Ireland have been taken down stone by stone and rebuilt and furnished exactly as they would have been around 1910. I got some pics of the first farmhouse before my batteries went dead!. I can remember old houses like this, but my friend who is 20 years younger than me can not. We got a big Govt grant in the late 70s to knock down our old houses and rebuild new bungalows. We called it bungalow blight! A lot of history was lost and thanks to this museum we can still see how it was.
The last 2 pics are of the country school.

Really great pictures. The first thing I noticed was how thick the walls were....just how wide the window sills are. When those got cold all the way through in the winter it seems like it would take a really long time to warm them up! What are the winters like in your area?

Thick walls=warm house. Our winters vary, as do our summers! This year has been mild but wet. We don't often get snow and at the moment it is real warm spring like weather with night frosts.

Great pics. I'm surprised that they tore down the old houses. Were they hard to heat or really small?

Why would they want to tear down something that looks like it would set there for centuries and put up a "bungelow". And I agree with Loren, that stonework is beautiful. Even purtier than vinyl siding.:)

Man, relocating a stone house of that size is quite an undertaking! I think that it is great that there are those willing to preserve the past. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but even pictures can't impart the information of the real thing. Thanks for sharing the photos.
