Couldn't resist it.........

How many guys buy a lawn mower the day after a major winter storm? We've always wanted a zero turn mower but never got around to getting one.

We walked into Home Depot yesterday on a totally different mission and were confronted by a Toro unit, 50" deck, 21.5 hp Kawasaki engine, a last year's unit left over.

Original price $2999, on clearance sale for $1988. I asked if my 10% military discount applied. Since it was already on sale, I didn't know if the military discount applied. It did. That brought the price down to $1789, close to half price. That's when it got too tempting to walk away from.

Our main mower has been a Poulan 24hp, 54" deck unit, but from what I've heard about zero turns being faster than regular mowers, I'm figuring speed will make up for the Toro being slightly smaller. Guess we'll find out come mowing time.

Yes you will out mow that Poulan with a zero turn.

I had a Toro Z Master with a Kawasaki on it and it did a great job for many years mowing close to 4 acres a week. Mine was the heavy built commercial model.

Son in law bought the lightweight home onwers model at the same time. He mowed about 2acres a week. His did not last to well.

Lighter drive motors and that"s what gave out first.

He bought my Commercial from me when I got my new mower and is still running it.

You will like the zero turn once you get the hang of it.

Goose,
Hope it works well for you. Let us know how your back feels after you go real fast and how much dust eat.

My CPA had one of the original Toros. Guess what, he now has a 54 inch craftsman/poland?

No, but I bought a 6000w generator from Home Depot a few weeks after Jan 2000 when the lights didn"t go out. Regular price 899.00. Got it for 549.00. It has had alot of hours on it since I bought it. Our power is off a lot. Sometimes 5 days at a time after bad storms with tornadoes.

I have had it running more than 90 hours straight a few times.

i looked at one yesterday, it too was 2995 not on sale, the main reason i mow with a old cub [ 1948] not a cadet, is that while a zero turn is indeed much faster than a riding mower, speed depends on your lawn, if your lawn isnt a perfectly manicured smooth showpiece, but instead a lumpy sort of lawn that most of us have which looks nice mowed but is not indeed as smooth as it looks, you cant use the speed of the zero turn, you'll spend your spare time at the chiropractor getting unjamed

Just because the zero turn will go fast isn't any reason to mow the lawn at a fast pace. My yard isn't level and I slow down when I come to the bumps. I haven't had to visit the doctor because of the mower.
Where one saves time mowing is in the turns the zero is capable of making.
On a related subject, I have seen people try to roto-till without it being set the proper depth and the tiller would jump all around and the operator didn't have a clue of why it wasn't doing what it was supposed to do.

You will love using the zero turn mower, it makes a bad job fun. We mow about four acres each week and use a Grasshopper zero turn for the good ground, kept the IH 184 for the rough ground though. It doesn't get hung up or spin, it will even mow through standing water with no trouble. Have fun, Joe

Other than a rough ride, you will enjoy the machine. Just barely bump the turn sticks until you log some time.

We have a deere 0-turn and i'll never go back to any other mower. The speed is so easy to control, just slow down in the rough spots. You'll save the most time turning around and by having very little trim to do.

Photo is 8 years old, but the lawn still looks the same.

It's my wife's pride and joy, and neighbors have likened it to a golf course.

Congrats on the new mower, I'm sure you'll love it.
I have one of the Toro Z-Master commercials that was mentioned.
54 inch deck, dump from the seat bagger that I use to collect leaves, etc.
It cut my mowing time in half from using a Farmall Cub with a 60 inch deck.
Harvey 2 nailed the reason. Sure it will mow at 12 mph, but that's not what saves
all the time. It's the turns. No need to go round and round, just straight back
and forth. No need for backing up, shifting gears or jockeying around obstacles.
Lots of fun!
Their are a couple drawbacks I've noticed. Due to the high speed the blades
rotate at, there is more dust than a regular mower.
What's worse is if you happen to catch a stone or something, it doesn't ping
around under the deck and come out the shoot. It goes straight out through
the side, blasting a hole through the deck. Take a look at some of the older
commercial ones and see how many have been patched/welded.
On the bright side, the metal is heavy enough to weld back up. :)

I have the Cub Cadet Zero turn with the steering wheel I think the only company with it and it is the best my 81 year mother won't get off it she can handle it like driving her car for her she says, and mows the grass real nice.

Congratulations, you will love it. Your time is saved going around the trees and such.

If your lawn is rough they will bounce you around, which you dont want to go that fast anyway, your lawn will look scalped.

I mentioned in the other post, I have a 72" Ferris with four wheel suspension. It came with the cheaper seat, I ordered the Exmark style seat for $300, it rides silky smooth now.

Last saturday I bought a zero turn, used, a husqvarna 54". 4 yrs old with 49 hrs from an old friend of mine. Also got a good deal. Took it out monday and played around the edge the hay field beside barn and garage; have been wanting a z turn for several yrs and am sure we will like it better than the old rider.

I've been mowing with a zero turn since 1971, a Hesston 110 with a nine foot cut on my hayfields. It's a 1967 model.
