Tyre and rim sizes

Hi guys. Any tyre experts among you?
My old Chamberlain tractor had a 14" wide rim and 16.9x28 tyres as standard. The previous owner widened the rims by around 3 to 4" and put 18.4x28 on it.
Do you reckon the widened rim would be too wide for a 16.9 size now? It's just that I can get some 16.9s at the right price.
Just a thought at this stage.
Cheers,
Rex

They will mount but I would be concerned for traction due to footprint psi. The 16.9 will float more with the wide rim. Thus having less pressure on the tread would cause slippage. Are you running duals? What kind of soil conditions do you have down under? Hard and compact narrow tire and rim, loose wide tire and rim. I would try them to save money.

I am no expert but I have seen a similar thing in a tire shop. It was almost impossible to seat the bead onto wide rims. The guy finnally got it by placing a large amount of goop that looked like Murphy's Oil Soap around the gap to seal it . When it popped onto the rim the sealer junk splattered all over everyone in the area including the walls. I thought what happens when that bead breaks loose from a flat tire and the shop doesn't have five gallons of goop to reseal it.Bad thing was it was my tire and rim.You should ask your tire shop.

It's a hobby tractor, not used under a load such as plowing. I haven't been able to get an accurate measurement, but it appears that the rim is around 16 or 17" wide. They are a bit narrower than the 18.4 tyre that is currently mounted.
