This weekend I had the priviledge of visiting with a gentleman who had quite an assortment of old tractors. I, myself, have '38 BR John Deere and he showed me 2 of his BRs and I made an uunusual discovery. My BR doesn't have compression release pitcocks on the block whereas both of his did. Can any of you John Deere experts tell me what might be the difference in the tractors. His were both electric start so I imagine they were later models than mine.

The early BR/BO's had the 149 cu inch engine like the early B's. When the B's were styled and cu inches upgraded in 1939 (175 cu inches I think), the BR/BO's got the same engine update. Bigger engines required a compression release. As you may know, they were never styled. The BR's and BO's were the only models that were never styled throughout their production run.

Needed a raking tractor back in the '70's- guy had a really nice BR, started, ran and looked great- he wanted $450, I only wanted to give $400. So bought a W4 for $800 instead.

Lucky for me, not all my decisions were that bad.
