Sun Dogs are awesome! (picture)

Blowing snow this morning at -17 degrees and a 25mph breeze. I got this amazing shot around 7:30. I'm just glad the old 656D hydro started.

In simple terms, at least around here, it means that it's so dang cold the air is actually frozen. Google sundogs and you'll get all kinds of good reading. They are actually very common around here in the winter when temps get below 0. They happen almost daily at -10 and below.

THAT photo belongs on a calendar for sure! I see small sun dogs around here from time to time, but NEVER anything like that! Thanks for sharing with us.
 
Sun dogs are caused by the refraction of light by ice crystals in the air. Not dissimilar to a rainbow where the water dropples refract the light. In a rainbow, the observer [you] are between the light source and the refraction. In the case of the sun dogs, that's not true.
 
How many of those big fans around your place and how close? Upwind or down wind? You must get some flicker off those for a few minutes if the sun is shining through spinning blades?
 
That one you see is the closest one, thank god. This particular wind farm runs all the way down the buffalo ridge, SD through MN and into IA. I am at the "top". those are the last ones. They are VERY noisy. It always sounds like a car coming down the road so when one does you can't hear it. Can't stand them at all and they are one heck of an eye sore. Flashing reds lights all night long.

Saw one on my way to work this morning...but not as spectacular as yours.
 
Awesome picture! Sometimes the camera does not pick up what the eye sees, but this time it got it good!
 
The old timers would say it's gonna be cold if you see sundogs. Well, duh, it's already cold, otherwise we wouldn't see them. Jim
