Wix filters ok to use?

I've always used JD filters, but Wix is 70% off next week at the local auto store. I don't know if I can pass up a deal like that, is Wix a good filter?

WIX is the best filter money can buy. I bought a wix, fram, and a baldwin all for my truck and cut them open to compare. Wix looks way better built and had better pleats inside.

I have used them for years on everything and have had no issues- except one-
Some years back WIX got inventive and took a common pleated paper full flow filter, installed a rubber baffle in it, and passed it off as a bypass filter as used on many older engines, in my case AC. That was just stupid. It has to make one wonder as it showed no understanding of what was going on with those systems.

You may find this hard to believe but John Deere
doesn't make any filters or oil they are made by
another company who is most likely the low bidder
for the contract.

That being said Wix is a top quality filter.

What chain is having that sale? Or is it a local one? Dad was just talking about stocking up on some stuff because one of the local dealers is having an open house next week, with a 10% discount on cash n carry parts.

I got an ad from O reilly's saying 70% off all Wix filters, that's all I know.

Champion at Albion Il. Makes a lot of different
brands. Fram and John Deere are among them. I guess
you know to good a filter is worse than to loose (or
to big of weave in the paper) . To tight a filter
won't let enough oil through and let most of the oil
bypass the filter.

I don't know of any engine that failed due to the brand of oil
filter, I don't buy fram, to pricey, walmart supertec made in
USA, I use them no problems, iv used purolator, AC deco,
Motocraft, stp, ect I never had any problems with any of them,
same for oil, my brother in law only uses mobile 1, I just use
regular engine oil, I never had any problems, and neither did
my bil, but he's paying alot more for it! And his Toyota truck
needed a new frame, under warrantery! My 99 Dakota dident
need a new frame,!!! Lol

(quoted from post at 21:42:55 02/15/13) I don't know of any engine that failed due to the brand of oil
filter

Cat engineers claim the engine life of their construction diesels is about 1 tablespoon of particulates. Air or oil borne makes no difference. Cheap filters destroy engines.

The engine life is based on one tablespoon??? This from the same Mfg's engineers that, once upon a time, recommened sprinkling just about that much BonAmi cleaner into the air stream to seat stubborn rings on their older engines. Don't believe it, find one of the older manuals and take a look, they actually had a part number for it to go along with the recommendation.

Beyond that, your right, poor quality filters will shorten engine life just as much as improper lubrication.

Yep, it's funny how some people will swear by an OEM's filters and refuse to buy one from any other name brand....even when that name brand is the one making the filters for the OEM.

Along those lines, at one time CAT had Donaldson making the majority of their filters, but some years they chanced and the new filters were made by Baldwin. Don't know for sure who is making them now but for sure CAT doesn't make them in house.

They're sold by O'Reilly,s and I've learned over the years that if O'R sells it, it's sure OK.

I work at a Donaldson air filter plant. The only difference between a John Deere,Case Ih,Cat,and aftermarket donaldson brand is the print on element and the label on the box.

BonAmi original recipe is not a coarse abrasive household cleaner. Use it on glass and chrome.

You are after 3 things with a filter:

1. It will stay intact and secured during the operational period.

2. It will trap particulate matter

3. It will allow bypass filtration if clogged.

You can pull up most any filter on the www and find out:

Mounting dimensions, threads and overall volume

Minimum filtration particle size trapped

Pressure release value of pop off valve.

Sometimes features are also added such as materials from which
seals are made.

I just did a personal study of Fram mid priced, Wix and Delco. I
took filters that all had been in-service in my p/u or my diesel
tractor for at least a year. I dissected them looking for
construction technique and integrity after having been in service
for that period.

All were intact including the Fram that gets whacked for using a
compostie paper for support members where others used metal.
None of the paper support elements were distorted, nor were
any of the glued joints defective.

On JD filters, JD doesn't make filters, nor bearings, nor belts, etc.
They buy them from an approved manufacturer. Once you know
the dimensions, filtration minimum, and popoff value you can
shop for a replacement.

My 2c,

I will never use a Fram filter in anything, and I own and manage a fairly large shop. Years ago, when I worked in a Chrysler dealership, I changed a number of Cummins diesels that no. 6 piston was damaged due to the filter coming apart and plugging the cooler nozzle. Maybe Fram filters are better now, but I just don't want to find out the hard way. Also, the local Wally World stocks Fram filters, and I just don't care for auto parts from them. Over the years, I have used lots of Wix filters with good results.

like others have said wix is the best filter out there, napa and carquest filters are made for them by wix, i know this because i worked for carquest in my younger days for a decade and had to attend a training course for certification on filters and there differences, consequently i wont put fram on anything i own lol or have my oil changed at a independent quick change, after talking to their filter suppler, for the local ones,[ i was trying to swing a deal with them to supply them our filters, which would have made me look super to the boss] but when a quick lube shop is paying 2.98 a filter, from the middle man, you know its not much better quality than no filter, heck our store cost was twice that. i dont know myself who makes filters for john deere, but if i ever find one i want to cut it open and see its components, that will tell all

A number of years ago I attended an Case-International oil and filter presentation. There was a rep from Fleet-guard there who stated that they made most oil filters for JD, CaseIH, and Agco. When asked if there was any differences in say a JD compared to Fleet-guard, he replied only the paint...Ron

Wix filters are also the King-Queen Mfg.of WILL FITS.They will use a filter for several different machines that don't fit right and need tweaked to work correctly. On the older can type filters, maybe 70% don't fit right or not even close.

I used to be a parts manager at a John Deere dealer and something they told us years ago was that not every company makes every filter. They all do various filters and trade around. Some filters are proprietary, however. The glass fuel filter used on many tractors (Deere's number for it is AR50041) is made by Stanadyne, PERIOD. Everyone's glass filter is made by them, or at least it was at one time. Mike

wow, after using over 100,000 dollars worth of filters on heavy equipment in the last 15 years now i find out theres wix filters that dont fit?

Check out the website bobistheoilguy.com. Not too long ago, these guys did a test on all the auto oil filters and came up with the following.. Purolator Gold is the best value filter out there..

OK,they don't make a suitable filter for Donalson air canisters(don't fit right, use gaskets to fill voids),since we(this board) use old tractors etc.,don't fit AC,Fram,Puralor cans without making do somehow.Wix's answer is to make-use more gaskets which they don't even put the first(new)one in anyway. For my money,I will stay with OEM and maybe sleep a little better.AS Fram used to say pay me now or pay me later.

I have NEVER had an issue with a Wix filter on my farm.
There is always someone out there with a differing opinion and thats fine. I will continue doing what I have done the last 22 years the same way.

Ordered a bunch of filters today, pretty good savings! $3.99 for the oil filter for a 7.3 Powerstroke, $29 for the outer air filter for the 4440, and $3.34 for the hydraulic oil filter for the 3020. Those are just a few examples. I bought a total of 32 filters

They must be, just like most everything else. They offer several service levels and are owned by a major corporation known for other things; I forget their name but used their creations in industry.

Why do I run them? Don't really know. But according to the specs I looked up, I could run any of the 3 in the same environment with the same specs. So, sometimes it's blue, or black, or orange. Depends on what I have in stock.

I've been running engines since the mid 50's and never lost an engine of any kind for any reason give one. A 70 hp 1975 Evinrude OB motor that siezed up due to the thermostat sticking shut before the advent of OT alarms on OB motors. Wasn't my fault. I had just bought it from a friend who assured me it was in tip top shape.

No, local O'Reilly's. They had a pretty good deal going on, if it wasn't for that, I would have went with fleetfilter.

Cool. You saved the shipping costs that add up. I should check if my local O'reillys has that deal going too.
