Have you ever come across one of those Standard Oil (I think it was) diesel fuel ads where that had tractors with a brick chimney? They warned against using heating oil in a diesel. I can still remember some using an Oilver 1855 I believe it was if memory serves me right.

Back in the early 70s we used #2 heating oil in the tractors and in the home furnace. Never seemed to be any issues with either.

Grade of purity. Diesel came off 2 or 3 steps further up the cracking tower at the refinery.
