Painting fence

We have a picket fence that my wife would like painted white. I understand that once it is painted it will be a labor of love to maintain. My thoughts are to brush the necessary points and perhaps spray the rest with an oil based paint. I'd like your thoughts on affordable sprayers for this task and paints that would be suitable. Thanks.

We have a 45' wide front porch with 163 spindles
It's been in place since 1998 which now is 15 years. We repainted it when it was 7 yrs old and again at 11 yrs old. I see some spots now that are peeling off already. I used implement paint with hardener last time after clearing off all the old paint. I figured if it stays on tractors it would stay on the porch railings. For the most part it has held up well even where the sun hits it the most. We will be going with a plastic rail next time. No more wood!

If the fence is bare wood now you'll be better off with white stain. It soaks in and becomes part of the wood. White paint, especially latex, will just peel off.

I think that you might be able to get those components that are made with polyurethane now - no maintenance ever (or so I am told).

That said, I doubt that they would last in the AZ sun.

Trying to remember how Red Green did that. I know it involved a wringer washer. He made a boom of sorts that sprayed on the fence using the pump in the washer. Then he had a rope on the rollers so it was self propelled. He dumped the paint in,turned it on,and sat back in the hammock while it painted the fence for him.

Erik........you remember Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer??? According to the story, Tom held that it took an artist to paint his Aunt Polly's fence white. Hoodwinked all the kids in town into painting it for him. .........Dell, gotta re-read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn ........GOOD BOOKS

Dell,

My wife is a retired high school English teacher. Some years ago she had to stop teaching Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn because they are not "polically correct".

Fun books no matter what.

If it were me I would paint the fence with Duration latex paint from Sherwin Williams. It will hold up better than a alkyd enamel. As far as applying it I would buy or rent an airless sprayer.

I hate to paint, so I spent the money on a wagner electric airless. I had to paint a wood shed with overlapped boards and knew what a pain it would be to cover every seam with a brush.

I was absolutely tickled with the job it did. 2 coats having to spray in every direction but it sure beat a brush.

Yep,that's the one. ROFLMO! Shower heads for nozzles. Worked great til it got to then end of the fence and painted his van.

Airless Wagner powersprayer. You can pick one up at Lowes for less than $300. Best money I spent on painting supplies. I used it to paint the walls and ceiling when I built my house and also use it to stain the exterior. It will really depend on the viscosity of what you are applying. You may have to rent a commercial grade sprayer.

Get a good sprayer...it will take you longer to set it up and clean it than it will take to actually paint the fence. I've got hundreds of feet of four board white fence on my farm and the sprayer takes the chore out of painting. I've. got the one that feeds out of a 5 gallon bucket
