The Americans after 6 months of brutal fighting have defeated the Japanese forces on Gadalcanal and captured the island.

"When they get to Heaven, St. Peter they will tell,
Another Marine reporting, Sir, I've served my time in Hell".

Before that people believed the nnalert were invincible jungle fighters,Guadalcanal changed that, the nnalert called it the "island of death"

My first real job was given to me by a USMC Guadalcanal veteran when I was 14 or 15.

At Guadalcanal, the US moved from defense to offense in the South Pacific and remained there for the duration of the war.

Come to think of it, Guadalcanal was where Marine Staff Sergeant John Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor.

To date, he's the only Medal of Honor winner to return to combat and be killed in action. He got bored selling war bonds and requested that he be returned to combat. He was in the first wave to hit the beach at Iwo Jima, and was killed about an hour later.

US navy got schooled in the waters around Guadalcanal too. Several of the old school black shoe captains were "promoted" to shore duty after their first combat patrols.

I just read "Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal" by James Hornfischer. For the first time it was explained why the navy didn't assign its rebuilt and over hauled older battleships to the Pacific war zones even though heavy surface firepower would have been extremely handy in places like Solomon Islands.

My uncle "Van" (Orville Van Hoose from Detroit, MI) was on this island carrying his weapon of choice, a Thompson machine gun for the First Marine division in 1942.

Captains (and Admirals) on both sides learned a lot about new technology - radar, air power, secure communications, automatic weapons...the list goes on and on.

But hindsight is 20/20. The young men on both sides fought an epic battle.
