Feel fortunate today.

I guess in life we all feel like we want this or wish we had that and dont relize how lucky we all are. Today I had a nice reminder.... My two oldest boys brought home a buddy from school last night (nice kid). When he walked in the door he had no coat. Though that was a little odd as he had short sleeves and it is winter but sometimes kids wont wear coats going from the car to the house so I didnt think alot of it. I got to looking around though and he wasnt even carrying one. This morning after breakfast I pulled one of my boys off to the side and asked if he had a coat, He said no dad I dont ever see him with one. Long story short I remembered a trip I had made to Menards and had picked up about 3 of the chore type coats they had on sale a couple of years ago in my clothset. Im sure its not what all the kids are wearing but he wasnt going to leave my place without a coat. Come to find out the boys family had a fire a year ago and the kids are all spit up in differant foster homes and this kids kinda bounces around. Well anyway the boy was greatfull and came outside and thanked me. I just feel bad he went through part of a winter without a coat. But he and my son took off for an adventure over the hill on our farm and It did me alot of good seeing the kid being able to be a kid.

Glad to hear your story, and keep up the work when and if you can. We too would rather hand something direct to someone. We make trips to Murdoch's often. Overalls, Coast, Boots are your main gifts. Gave a guy some beef the other day.

Very admirable.. I would have probably done the same thing.

Got to question the Salvation Army in your area though, They generally can clothe those in need in an emergency.

Some folks feel too proud to rely on them..I buy most my clothes from them.. They cover my butt, and the sales continue to keep them in business for free offerings to those in desperate need .

his foster parents need a quick kick in the backside, they get a monthly payment for housing, feeding, and clothing him. My wife teaches school and see this kind of fraud all the time...really, really sad :(

You had more forethought than I would have had to even ask. Way too often anymore you see kids wearing stocking caps in the heat of summer, then choosing to go without boots or coats in the winter. Guess I would have just assumed he was one of those.

Good for you! I'd rather do for someone in the vicinity than give a dollar to an organized charity where over 90% of the money goes into the pockets of the administration - with the exception of the Salvation Army. Can't recall ever buying anything there, but we've donated a whole lot of stuff to them.

You are a very honorable and observing person. I would have been one of those who just figured he's warm blooded and doesn't want to wear a coat. Marilyn used to see that happen with foster children when she worked child care. She notified the parents and if the situation wasn't changed the DHS was notified. Jim

Your little story made my day.It sounds like you are not self centered like so many today.May this would have more people like you. Thanks

Back in '63 in Korea in JAN I saw a 9 year old kid dressed like your kid's friend. He was shivering in the -10 temp.

My friend with me told us he'd see us later.
I found out later that he took him in the local GI store & put him a GI winter outfit down to wool long johns, wool pants, shirt, field jacket w/liner, bunny cap, wool socks & boots.

Any time we went to the village that kid wanted to know where Dela Garzia was. I believe that if J.C. himself was to visit that kid he'd have to wait to see what Dela Garza wanted first.

You done real good!

Kinda amkes me mad though. Here in MN foster parents get good money to take kids like that in. Only reason for that kid not having a jacket is someones greed! That needs to get reported!

Did his parents die in the fire? The kids parents should be with the kid even if they have nowhere to live, parents need to take care of their own kids.
That was real nice of you to give him a coat.

Back in the mid 80s A buddy of mine and his wife went to a orphanage, when they walked into this place every child (all ranging in age of 3 to 8) ran to them similar to how a bunch of puppies would run to a person walking into a pet store. All these kids needed homes, their own beds, and of course parents that love them. This buddy of mine and his wife left, his wife was in tears knowing that she could not help all of them and that these kids needed real homes.

So glad to hear you helped him. I'm sure it meant a lot to him. It will come back to you in one form or another.

Makes you feel good to do something like that every now and then. You only hope they remember it in later life, and return the favor.

My wife belongs to Altrusa, a local womens service club. She atarted a project 5 years ago providing shoes and boots to kids whose parents can't afford them. So far they've giv3en away over 1400 pairs of shoes and boots to needy kids in our county, and that's a county of 44,000 population. You just never know the needs of others all around you. You've done as our saviour said, to the least of those around us.

You touched my heart this morning, man I hope there is more people like you out there.
