Still Snowing

In case anybody doubted the existance of angry snow gods - I have irrefutable proof.

Went to fire up the snow blower this morning - would not start. Kept trying and trying - snapped the rope...

I of course have no more rope... I could go buy some, all I have to do is clear my driveway so I can go get it...

If only I had a snowblower to do that...

... maybe I can use baler twine...

anyways - hard to measure how much we've gotten so far because the wind has moved it everywhere - It'll be five feet deep in one spot right next to an area that's only 2" deep.

Still coming down at a decent pace.

I'll throw in a few pics - yes I know - the tractor shouldn't have been left out, but that's another long story.

This snow is all from last night - previous snow had just finished melting away the day before.

The next time you buy a snowblower get the one with the 110 volt ac electric start.
And add on the headlight and heated handle grips.

The weather people around here are like politicians with thier words.
Instead of saying they were wrong the say we were spared.

I looked at the NOAA snow depth map. It shows about 60 inches on the NY/NJ line, in the area where Larry Stein lives. I haven't seen him on here yet today.

Sort of a "Character Building" day.

Time for one neighbor to help another. A few years ago we did that, shoveled, snowblowered, chatted and all the neighbor stuff. The lady next door had snow covering her entire garage door. I mean it was a great drift.

I used the neighbor's big blower to take out the bottom, when it collapsed I took out the new bottom and on the third try it pretty much had it all.

Great time for a cigar, hot coffee and laughs.

that's the kicker - it HAS the electric start - but I burnt the starter out two years ago!

my own fault for not repairing it. We just had such a non-winter last year, then this year seemed to be going the same way -

I kind of forgot how important it is to work out these issues ahead of time.

wow - 60" is a LOT of snow - if I had to guess I'd say we've gotten a about 24 so far.

again - with the drifing it's really hard to say.

JR,
Still going here at 930, looks like it will snow at least till 1 or 2. about 2 ft with 4 ft drifts down wind. So north side of house and objects bare or just a few inches, down wind side a few feet of snow.
Snow blower has a flat and i too let it go and did not give it a pre-season tune up.
Its a "78 toro 726 and is pretty much on its last, severly beatup and abused last legs. The "newer", 80's toro 826 that was supposed to replace it doesnt start and appears to have a blown auger gearbox.
So it will have to be Hercules and shovels.
Must get car out our 300 ft gravel drive as i dropped wife at work yesterday at 2pm. Nurses assitant, wrked the 3-11 last nite and wrkng the 7-3 this am. All at blizzard double pay. best i get the snow cleared up by monday as the forecast calls for rain monday nite.

Oh i know how you feel with a cantankerous snow blower . Mine you MUST PREHEAT first before you try pulling on the rope , even with a 5 W oil in it since it sets outside under a tarp. So IF the space heater just happens to work then i use it , if that does not work then the pop corn popper gets stuffed under the tarp and when all the snow is melted off the tarp and only then the piece of junk will start on the first or second pull.

10:40 now - we've added about 3 or 4" to what's in those pictures. Too lazy to re-take them.

But I think we're finally on the tail end of it now.

Definitely a good storm.

Take it easy shoveling out there - I'm sure hear that enough from your wife if she's a nurse.

My mom was a nurse too - she'd always call to remind me to go easy shoveling.

where are you located? We got about 18 inches here on the south shore of Long Island--but the slush underneath was terrible--it really stained my little ford 1310 trying to push it.

JRSutton- I broke the pull rope on my log splitter the other day. Needed the log splitter badly and did not have time to get new rope. So I pulled the pull rope assembly from the engine. Got a socket, extensions and cordless drill. I selected socket just a little bigger than perfect fit because when the engine starts, I would want to be able to remove the socket as quickly as possible.

Engine fired right up andno problems with getting the socket away.

This might be a quick fix to help you get through.

So, is that what you call a storm door?

Poor tractor. I had to dig the snow out of the kozy komfort on my H farmall once so I could get on it. Little babe fired right up and promptly blew the snow back from the engine into my face. I had the tractor at the house parked in the drive ready for the blizzard. At the NW side of the house I could have reached the eve on the drift. That was in Ogallala NB. That was a big one in 77 or 78. Had to push snow away from the gates at the store to get inside.

Between Ogallala and Brule on I-80 the snow blew in and filled under and beside an overpass. Two semi's had parked under there while the storm was going and it packed them in.

My H had a three point hitch and fluid in the rear tires. On the single front I had a Jayhawk loader (had been Dad's) with a dozer blade. It was real handy that time.

There, that was kinda a fun memory.

NOW you tell me!

That's a great idea - can't beleive I never thought of it before, seems almost obvious now that you say it.

I'll keep that little trick in mind next time, as I'm sure there will be a next time.
