You can say what you will about the 6.5 Chevy TD, but mine has been a warrior. Just turned 161K miles and she is still running great. Checked the mpg and I am still getting a little over 20. I don't need no Power Stroke/Cummins/Duramax. $50K and all show.

My 98 with the 6.5 td has 230k on it and still running strong. The transmission needed rebuilding a year ago. The body looks as good as the day it was new. I only 15 MPG though. It is very nice driving truck.

You obviously don't tow much. I had a 96 GMC that would lay down and die (or overheat) whenever I came to a mountain...then the brakes were another story...then the FSD....then the front wheel studs kept twisting off....gave it away and bought a new '01 Dodge 3/4 ton diesel and never looked back!

Thats all good to know, just went and looked at a 93 with a 6.5 with 65000 miles on it. It"s in real good shape, it will be my sons first truck. hes 14 so he will have time to get it the way he wants it.Jim

'93 and below models got better fuel mileage because the inj pump was mechanically not electronically controlled. I'll bet your son won't get many tickets for exhibition of speed(smoking of rear tires).

Hi
They are like everything else you either get a good one or a pile of trouble, sounds like yours is a good one, Ive seen them with major motor problems, guy changed the motor in a dealers and the rebuilt motor puked in the shop 3 hours after install broke the block like the original. I hear that if you can afford it if the motor dies, put the Hummer diesel in as an upgrade that the U.S military use it's no better for fuel economy but it's bomb proof compared to the others.
Regards Robert

you don't? A 93 pre -power stroke IDI 7.3 Turbo dsl.pulled the azz of of a 6.5,then the powerstroke came out and the slaughter began, 161K and you haven't cracked a piston? pretty lucky! I'll keep my Cummins

I have a 97 6.5l with 140k on the clock. The engine is gutless and runs okay, the rest of the truck is junk.
I also have a 97 7.3l that will outpull the Chevy any day of the week, plus the doors, window and wipers work, Bonus!

I have a '95 4x4 3/4 ton 6.5 Chevy truck. I bought it cheap because it had a bad engine. I installed a new engine and have put almost 100K on it since then. I have pulled a lot of heavy loads and it has always pulled them, albeit rather slow at times. I have driven them all and will agree that a Powerstroke, Cummins or Duramax have more power and will pull MUCH better than the 6.5 Chevy. But this is what I have and I will continue to use it until it quits.
