Ot tax question.

I was just thinking, as March 20th approaches, or what ever day it is this year, how many people on here have a state sales tax? What state? And what precent% rate. Here in NY it's 8% on the dollar for all goods and services. Cutting grass is taxable, I have to collect the tax than turn it in to the state. Landscaping is a capital improvement, so there's no tax. The costumer has to fill out a no tax form, than I have to keep it on file. Because there's so many on here from all over I thought I'd ask. NY was also trying to make other states collect tax on Internet sales to NY buyers then turn it over to NY! Lol

Mn. has one but I cannot even tell you what the rate is. I know what we pay retail is 6.875% but part of that is a city tax that is collected by the state and then part is sent back to the appropriate city.

6% in Michigan. Our abundant nerd nnalert governor wants to raise it to 8% to fix the roads. Oh well,at least it's not "for the children" this time.

The sales tax here in MD is 6% on just about everything including clothes. No tax on grocery items. If you buy any food item for a pet you're charged tax. I bought a Kohler standby generator last summer. We placed the order in AZ
and the generator was shipped from TX to GA. Then it was shipped to MD and delivered in a big truck that had the hydraulic lift gate. No sales tax and free shipping. We are close to the state of Delaware where there's no sales tax.
The state of MD has road runners out near the state line looking for and stopping cars that may have bought items in DE. The more they get the more they spend. Hal
PS: Delaware has the Dupont family and they contribute a lot to the economy. They hire a lot of Chemists. Even make dynamite.

I pay sales tax to NYS too, have done for years. All of my sales are in one county so I don't have to worry about the different tax rates in different counties. I used to do craft shows and a farmers market but now I just sell online or from here.

Ohio/Ashtabula County 7.5%. Governor wants to reduce state sales tax by .5% Ohio charges on almost everything except food. Restaurant food is charged tax.

TN has state and local; I think the maximum allowed for both (added together) is 9.75%........which ours is. I'm (relatively) happy to pay it 'cause there's no state income tax. (at least not on wages, earned income; there is some on dividends, etc)

6% Sales -Service - and Use Tax in WV. Don't make any difference what state you buy it in, if you use it in your business(tools-shop supplies or a piece of machinery} you pay the 6% Use Tax. I have to charge 6% on parts and labor, unless the customer can fill out an exemption form. Commercial Agricultural Producers are exempt.Very few others are.

Sales tax in IL is 6.25% in most areas. In the Chicago area it's around 8%.
Food and medicine is taxed at 1%.

Went on trip south to the great state of taxes ( Califirnia) stopped and had lunch in nice restaurant . When I got the bill it didn't add up so I called the waitress over and said this bill doesn't add up correct it's to much. She looked at me and said " Your not Oregon anymore kid"
Bummer

In Texas it is 6.25% for the state and 2% for most all localities. Most food is exempt. Seems to work. Not all that bad considering we don't have an income tax. I like the sales tax; everybody has to pay it so the low balls and the high balls have to kick into the pot they use....community services.

I remember when mn had 4% sales tax. They took it to 5% but said that was just temp, to get things balanced. They were right, a year later they made it 6%.......

Now cities and counties can add to it, and some can access special taxes for stadiums and stuff, so no one knows that it really is, typically around 7%.

Food and clothing is not taxed tho.

Now they want to includ clothing, but lower the tax, but only tax clothes over $200, but offer rebates to poor people paying clothing tax, but generate more stable sales tax off of rich people.....

Oh boy. What a mess. We have a high income tax as well, but real estate taxes are only on land and buildings, not possessions like some of you have, and the real estate is mostly local county driven.

So, of late, the state has stopped making payments to the local counties and school districts, so the real estate tax has to go up to fund county services, which the state mandates they have but no longer funds...

Oh, boy. What a mess.

People with money are fleeing high tax states (Income tax) . Look at Florida, Texas, Nevada, etc. Now maybe they get it back on sales tax, but at least everyone who buys stuff participates.

In Ontario it is 13% Harmonized Sales Tax. 8% goes to the province and 5% goes to the federal government. Food except restaurant meals and drugs are exempt, and farmers get most of it back but they have to fill out paperwork to claim it.

South Dakohta is 4% but the town we shop and work in gets an extra 2%. The town I live in doesn't, but there's not too much to buy out here so we mostly pay 6%

No income tax.

6% sales tax in PA. Then we have a local Per Capita tax, An EMST tax 52.00 per year to the town where you work. Local earned income tax, county property tax, school property tax, municipal property tax, and the list goes on.

I've been stationed in 4 states since 2008 when I returned from Germany. Most places were around 7-8% Kansas has been the highest at 9% in Johnson County. But nothing even comes close to the 19.5%VAT in Germany!!!

I think the State BASE rate in MN is 6 3/8 %. Some towns have local sales taxes, voted on by 'their' residents, and paid by all who shop there. St. Cloud is one, new library, recreational facilities, parks, always trying to expand the civic Center which hangs on the Mississippi river bank. Still trying to get State bond money for that fiasco.
