Will a slave cylinder used on a Case tractor (yellow) with power brakes which uses universal transmission fluid be OK when used on another machine which uses brake fluid to operate the slave cylinder? Didn't know about how the brake fluid would affect the seals set up for transmission fluid. I can buy after market Case slave cylinders for $130 less than Deere ones for a John Deere 4420 combine. They look to be about the same unit. If the fluids are compatible I will physically get one to see for sure. Measurements seem to be the same. Thanks. |

Brake fluid will not swell rubber brake cups, oil will ruin a standard brake system that uses brake fluid. DOT 5 will work fine in all brake systems except anti locks.

It depends entirely of what the seals are made of. In general, you can't use cylinders intended for petroleum-based fluid with glycol fluids and vice versa. However, some cylinders can be used with either. I believe the seals need to be made of neoprene to be resistant to both types of fluid. Without access to the manufacturer's specs, there's no way to know if the Case cylinder will work.

Brake fluid is nasty stuff. I'm betting the first time it set over night you would find a surprise leak in the morning.

Can you drain that system and replace the Brake Fluid with Silicone brake Fluid..?? The Silicone fluid would last a lifetime and not damage the seals.. Ron..

I think brake fluid will make the seals swell up real bad.

I know that DOT 5 silicone fluid will not mix with DOT 3 brake fluid. Will cause seals to enlarge (swell) about 10 times oversize.

I've drained the old dot 3 out and ran silicone dot 5 from meskegon brake co. in until I could see the new purple fluid and all was fine.
