Last combine with variable belt drive and manuals transmi...

I don't know the answer, but a marker may be the IH 101 that I have, with variable belt & manual shift transmission. ~1950-1955?

The Gleaner x3 series (F3, M3, etc) had it through the 1980s, would think perhaps well into the 90s on some brands?

The John Deere 4420 was made later than the other combines mentioned. I don't remember if it made it to the end of 20 series production in 1988. At some point in the mid-1980's the European 4435 made it here and I don't recall the specs. Correct me if I am wrong but the Gleanor F3 was hydrostatic and that ran during the mid 1980's as well. I think the White 7300 was gone by the early 1980's. I don't remember much about the MF 540.

Brother had a CII Gleaner variable and an IH pull type then went to 2 JD model 7720's. He had to replace the hydraulic drive motors on both machines after 3 years of use; he wasn't too happy about that.

I was just going to post back about that after having done more research. The Gleanor F3 had both hydro and V Belt options available. The MF 550, not 540, lists both. This is all from a source from 1985. We had a couple strong AC dealers then and everything I saw come in had a hydro because nearly everybody wanted a Mud Hog for their machine. I think all the 6620 and 7720 combines that came through were hydro as well. Probably V Belts were more prominent in wheat country. I guess effectively for what was sold around here back in the day the 4420 was the most widely available V Belt machine.

The JD 105, 95, and 55 had variable belt drive and gear trannies. I think IH from tnat period did also.

New Holland TR75 in the 80s still offered them. Belt drive with a POS John Deere transmission that even JD wouldn't use. Had to shift through first gear to get to reverse. When it took a sh-t, NH dealer wouldn't work on it. Took it out ourselves and dropped it off at JDs doorstep to have it repaired. NH wonders why they could never sell combines in the area. With dealer support like that who needs competition to loose business!
