O/T Working in the shop

I used to struggle with bronchitis a lot when I had to do a lot of welding and or cutting with chop saw. Probably due to decades of abusing my lungs from the same. A few years ago, I started wearing a real good quality paint mask any and every time I cut metal, weld or when there was dust from old brake shoes. I have not had bronchitis or been sick since. 2 weeks ago I had to do a lot of welding on galvanize pipe indoors. I have had no problems. It is amazing how much stuff these masks can collect. Just wanted to share this.

The main ingredient in galvanizing is zinc. Good news is it does not build up in your system over time....and this too shall pass

A few years ago working in an underground mine in Arizona we almost lost 6 men ,including myself due to cutting galvanized tunnel liner with a torch. The two that were in the basket of the manlift installing the liner were up high and were the two most effected as was the miner with the torch.I was operating the lift and was not as seriously effected. Really wierd, the first thing you notice is that you lose the center part of your vision. All you have is periferal vision. The two bringing in the supplies saw us down and called for help. We were force fed milk on the way to the hospital 55 miles away. I don't remember the why of the milk, I think it draws the zinc out of you system, or something like that.

Been wearing a resperator for decades. Can't believe what it kept form going in to my lungs, especially insulation, saw dust, paint, exhaust from a 2-cycle, and the list goes on.

I carry a resperator in my truck too. I even have a full face resperator for when it really gets dusty and I don't want to get my eyes full too.

I don't weld that much, but when I do, it's outside my garage. Good way to prevent fires.

Resperators have a short life, so keep spares. The rubber seems to break down along with the straps.
