Soak it overnight in penetrating oil!

My dad a,ways told me to do this for rusty stuck bolts. I've heard the same from other people over the years and have done it myself.

I have not once seen this actually work on anything! Has anyone?

Yes it works but sometimes it takes longer than overnight. Heating the area around the bolt and vibration {tap with hammer} work the best.

no, usually takes muscle power, heat, or cutting torch.
the thing is to use anti sieze stuff on assembly and not have to fight on disassembly.

Penetrating oil at sunset, and then add a heat from a torch in the morning. That's what gets results.

The fastest way to remove a stuck nut from a bolt is use a cold chisel on all flat sides of the nut. It expands the nut slightly, breaking the bond caused by rust. It even works on nuts frozen by fertilizer. Joe

I usually run out of patience before it would work. I am usually getting paid by the hour. So I usually go to the blue wrench. Getting things apart even if you have to use new bolts is usually cheaper in the long run time wise.

Had a guy come and work on the grain leg. He did not even try the bolts on the bearings. He just cut them off and replaced them. He told me that most of the time trying to get them off just rounds out the square hole so the carriage bolts will not tighten when you go to put it back together. He replaced the top and bottom bearing in under three hours by himself. He did not even use my pillow block bearing housings. He had the bearing in used housings already. He just charges if yours are shot. He replaces the bearings at his shop when he has time. I could not have done it any faster and he had everything he needed. I would have been climbing the leg several times to get the repair done. I will stick to working on the things I know and let him do what he is good at.

I had a bunch of rusted bolts I penetrated numerous times over about a two week period. Several different well known brands. NONE of them penetrated over a couple threads. Impacted them off, wasn't easy. My best results are using a propane torch, and candle wax. That stuff will penetrate.

I have had good luck heating the part, as it's coling add the penetrating oil, and it gets sucked into the patr. Workes for me. Stan

The problem with penetrating oil is it doesn't. Doesn't penetrate, that is. There's simply no way that any oil or solvent is going to migrate into the threads of a torqued and corroded fastener. Iron expands when it turns to rust, so there's no void between the threads that a liquid can enter. Penetrating oil on bolt threads does help once the nut is moving, though.

Heat is what works. And you don't have to wait until the next morning to fire up your torch.

We have it, and use it some, but I ussually skip right to the torch to either heat it up or cut it off. Time is money, and time wasted on a bolt you're gonna replace anyway is pointless. Only ones worth saving are the big ones that cost an arm & a leg...

I have very good luck getting broken bolts out too. Not with easy outs, but with a welder. Do it all the time at work and the farm. At work, they know to just save time and give it to me right away instead of trying any other methods. I can ussually get them out in a matter of 30 seconds, once the welder is turned on.
