OT Free credit report

I am asking here because here I will get an honest, no scam answer.

Where is the correct to get your free credit report without signing up for something.

There are three major credit reporting businesses. Each one is required by law to give you a free copy of your report once a year if you request it. I've done it online but don't recall the website I used. A google search should help you out. They'll give you a copy of the report, not your score. You gotta pay for that.

Ted,

Your bank can tell you for sure... but Experian, Equifax and TransUnion are the recommended ones. Here is a link with their numbers.

Or just google "3 major free credit reports" if you don't feel comfortable clicking on my link.

Harvey,
Someone could still get ahold of your SS number and other info and open credit accounts in your name... and you will be responsible for the debt. Everyone should check their credit report annually - just for that reason.

Happened to a guy in our area... someone had opened a credit account out east with his information.

I tried it once, took a year to get rid of them. Your bank should run it for you if you ask.

(quoted from post at 18:03:56 02/02/13) Why not just pay cash for everything ? That way one doesn't have to worry about scores.
Seriously? Most people aren't fortunate enough to be able to pay cash for a house or car. Most businesses big and small use credit. If you've gone through life never having to use credit, you're truly blessed.

With identity theft being such a problem it's a good idea to keep tabs on your credit report whether you use credit or not.

The reports show who's been snooping at your report. Credit card companies check your report for promotional purposes. If you have a clean report they'll try to recruit you as a customer.

Ted,

I use AnnualCreditReport.com. It gives you direct,no-cost access to the three credit reporting outfits. I get a free report from 1 outfit in January, a second report from another outfit in May and a third report from the third outfit in September. This way I get a look-see every 4 months instead of once a year.

When I first got into home building my brother and I were going to do a spec house. I had borrowed for different things in the past but my brother never did. He had enough cash on hand he could have paid for the cost of the house with it but we decided to borrow for it. The banker looked at my credit history and and said he had no problem giving me the money but he didn't like it that my brother had no credit history. We got the loan but having some credit history is not all bad either. Now days it is the score that they base everything on including auto insurance.

annualcreditreport.com gives you your credit report from each of the three agencies BUT does not give you your credit score.

The correct site is "annualcreditreport.com". This is the site run by TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. You can request a report from any one or all three of these reporting agencies.

There's a highly advertised site "freecreditreport.com" that offers a "free" credit report, but in fact signs you up for a $20/month service. Stay away from this site!

If you are worried about credit thieves, lock your credit accounts. Each credit agency tells you how to do it and it's $10 for two of them and $10.85 for the other.

When you want something on two of them you can get on the www and open it for whatever window you choose. The third one takes a phone call.

I bought a new truck recently and the selling dealer came to me and said that he couldn't finance my truck.......financing at least part of the purchase to get the Ally Bank $2k discount off the selling price. I said why? He said "because I can't get into your credit report....I have tried every way I know".

I explained what I had done, opened it, he got his info, I got the truck for 3.75% over 5 years, financed in part because I got an additional $2k for financing something ($10k was all it took) through the Ally bank (drumming up new customers) which is a result of the Govt. take over. He liked the idea and told me he was going to lock down his personal accounts (Owner of the dealership).

While I'm here, I bought a 2011 Chev. P/U 2 years ago at a great price, not the same old Chevys of old (gave up on GM back in the '80's), got some super financing from the rolled over GMAC which is now Ally bank.

For all you boo birds out there, the gov't intervention in that company turned it around as far as I can tell. I bought a better product than any GM I ever owned, and got as good of a financing as one could ask for. When is the last time you got 3.75% for a 5 year loan on a P/U with about $5k worth of discounts too, plus taking in 2 trucks and a car in trade and giving excellent trade prices?

Don't get me wrong, I went to Dodge back in the '80's and stayed there. The reason for the change was that I retired, didn't need 3 vehicles any longer (the two trucks were Dodges) and I wanted the closest servicing dealer....just happened to be GM and I am not sorry.

Do I work for GM? No, I'm retired and not from them. I just want to inject the fact that all the hoopla you get thrown at you "tain't necessarily so".

American Express card holders can get a free credit report,(a synopsis of the 3 major credit
reporting agencies) PLUS a credit score by logging
into the Amex website.
(of course you must have an Amex card, and register)

Someone asks a simple question and this is what you get...

If you are in the process of applying for a loan or mortgage, it is not a good time for a self credit check. It will show up in the mortgage co.
when they check your credit. So I have been informed

The site as posted by MarkB_Mi is correct. He is also correct in saying you must use this site for the free report. There are three companys and you will have to go into the site three times once for each company. You only get the report not your score which you need to pay for. I would never pay to see your own score just ask your bank.

I found Trans-Union to be very hard to deal with - they had 21 accounts in default listed to me. I worked from June to September to get it cleared up. My bank did not pay any attention to the report however you need to keep them clean as some collection agency can sue you. That can cost money to defend yourself. Good Luck
